If you don’t know much about climate change and the impact of industrial companies taking over the world you need to watch Invasion and Anthropocene: The Human Epoch. Invasion was a short film about Wet'suwet'en fighting to put an end to pipeline companies terrorizing them. Their native ancestors have been living there for more than 12,000 years and Canada has the nerve to give those companies approval to use land that doesn’t belong to them and on top of that say they are trying to build/ fix their relationship with the natives. The Wet'suwet'en presented their side of the story by bringing the viewer to the frontlines of the issue. Anthropocene is a movie that reveals the actions of humans to the environment. We use excessive amounts of paper, batteries and oil then dump an outrageous amount of trash to massive landfills. This film showed the consequences of humans using heaps of land that can’t be restored back to its original state or land that can never be used again. The two films use statistics and firsthand accounts to relay their message, this is more convincing than just stating opinions on each side.

Climate change has been impacted by the increase of carbon emission, deforestation, coal/oil mining, over consumption and excessive waste. These all factor into the increase of industrialization and capitalism. The world was built to have enough food for every being on earth, yet there are so many homeless and hungry and the rich keep getting richer. To meet the needs of the people or companies they mine more, cut more trees, build more factories, make more landfills, and make more farmlands. What happens when they are done using the land? Nothing. Its inhabitable and all the natural resources and medicine in there is destroyed. The images of those huge, magnificent trees being cut down and shipped in tons is depressing. The aftermath of deforestation is absolutely disgusting. They just Chop, chop, chop but don’t clean their mess, if they cleaned up maybe the trees could have grown back.

We keep carving into the earth and carving out rocks from mountains just to decorate our homes and gardens. Villages and towns get displaced or polluted for the expansion of metal refinery and mining expansion. In Russia workers of the mines and metal refineries actually enjoy their jobs despite their city being severely polluted. One worker described the metal that gets engulfed in the flames as a beautiful flower. They don’t say anything bad about the work, they make sure to say they LOVE their job; they must be joking, don’t they want to enjoy breathing clean air? However, if they want food on the table and a roof over their head, they might not have much to choose from.

Invasion held significance in showing the native culture and voice. There was chanting and singing to depict the importance of what the land means to them. Its their heritage, it makes them who they are. They are peaceful and love to admire nature and spend time with their community members. They have protested and confronted the Canadians that are trying to take their land. If pipelines are built then they won’t have access to clean water, hence pollution. Land of the natives is their pride and culture, taking away their land is taking their culture, their freedom.

On the other hand, Anthropocene presented many different situations where a staggering amount of land was used. The tiny boat in a sea of liquid lithium. Enormous landfills where waste is added constantly, birds scavenge for food and people rummage through it for materials, glass and/ plastics. Another important part they emphasized in this is the burning of Ivory- elephant tusks, thousands of elephant tusks. The ivory was arranged in a way that made them look like huts. Some ivory had labels of where the elephants were from most were probably from the black market or poachers. A woman said that even though she couldn’t stop them from dying at least she can stop them from being desecrated further. Part of this film they emphasized broadly on the machinery and a little on the animals.

We need to think about climate change with the world, not just a few groups or countries we need to all get together to take action to slow down or reverse climate change as much as possible. If we want real action to keep the earth running longer the 1-5% million/ billionaires need to get in on the action.to be able to switch to alternative energies or resources may require a large sum of money, and apparently Jeff Bezos has enough to feed the entire world’s population, so him contribution to this cause might not affect him too much.

Arguing or fighting for a better world or environment is tricky. The American government fights to get more oil in the pretext of protecting our freedom. In invasion they displayed snip bits of peaceful protests that happened in American and Canada in support of no pipelines. The government then responded with armed military to cut though people holding cardboard signs. A large portion of the world’s population is filled with bystanders, most who think they don’t have to step up to a crisis or situation, someone else will act and solve the problem instead.

Some of us are numb to this type of situation, occasionally we might feel like we need to do something then again it sometimes feels like there is no hope and you just get used to the world falling apart. It gets tiring advocating for something that the politicians call fake and simultaneously brain washing half the population. Nonetheless, people will continue to fight one way or another, they will continue to fight to protect their land and the environment against the corrupt and greedy politicians and industrial companies.

To sum up everything that has been stated so far, protesting, and informing people of the injustice that is happening to the natives brings awareness and publicity to the cause. Additionally, showing the effects of deforestation, mining and waste production gave lots of different types of visuals to reveal how severe it has become. In order to do something about this you have to open your eyes to the reality of the world around you. The two films gave a good spectrum of results that came from different stand points of climate change. If we can’t change or don’t act, then there is no hope for the future. The videos demonstrated the world is already bad and polluted enough and if we want to see change, we need to change our lifestyle.
