What makes it fair to give every student the same five paged knowledge test, when they are all different? Expectations are at a constant increase for students. Every year the average acceptance rates are lower, grades need to be higher, and all of it is determined by some paper. Skills that are learned in schools are without a doubt very important, but when it comes to putting them to the test it is all about writing about the insight. Not putting it to a real life scenario. Large tests like this do not mirror real life situations, they are not practical, and cause an exorbitant amount of mental stress, and most importantly completely neglects the student voice and opinion. The circumstances that come with exams are far too harsh to accurately reflect the intelligence and ability of high school students. 

Exams do not accurately depict real-life scenarios. Students are taught to be good at what is put on paper, and not the types of issues that they will inevitably face in life. Teenagers are taught how to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, but are not taught how to use them to their advantage. This includes resources that most have access to. "Teaching without resources is like trying to build a house without power tools."- Eric Chase (Edmodo). In other words, the amount of resources available should be used, and not ignored, they make things easier. Teachers can be caught up in the idea that students should know how to prove their strong abilities by remembering which answers are correct, with no access to help. “No calculators, and no talking to other students.” are common statements made by teachers before an exam. The reality is that people and technology are everywhere, when will there ever be a situation where there is nobody to ask for help from? An extra bit of help from a peer, or a calculator could aid students in reaching their full potential and ability while being able to show that on a test. Every single person on this planet has had experiences that nobody else has. Experience changes the way a person thinks. By talking to peers during an exam, students would learn a variety of valuable skills; teamwork, perseverance, critical thinking, work ethic and techniques, and even empathy, just to name a few. Unfortunately, that is not what exams are actually about in modern-day classrooms.
