After finishing high school, college is something many of my peers were looking toward, this process did not apply to me at the time. During my summer after Senior year, I was mentally exhausted from all the hard work I had put in the last four years and just wanted a well-needed year or so to plan out my life. Was college something I wanted to get right back into? Should I consider taking a gap year to analyze whether college was something I wanted to prepare for? Through that ultimatum, I finally decided that taking a gap year was necessary at the time for my life. This essay consists of my personal experience taking a gap year to reconstruct my overall plan for my future. First, I will explain how taking that year off encouraged me to work on my biggest goal, weight loss. Then, I will show how important it was to take the yar off in order to know that field I was going to go into. 

Initially, college was something I desperately wanted to get into. Throughout high school, you see many academic opportunities and scholarships that are available to the school. When I first saw this, I was amazed by the overwhelming crowds of my peers who wanted that opportunity to get into college as soon as possible. For me, however, I just did not feel the vibe of college quite yet. So, when I took that gap year, I tremendously wanted to get in shape. At the time, I weighed at about two-hundred fifty pounds. The majority of school, I was clinically obese and was not wanting to go into college the same weight. So, during that summer, I pushed myself harder every day to practice routine exercises. A couple things I did was biking, walking, and consuming less sugary foods. Some may say “Hey, the local college has a gym which you can work out there, also, the campus is sufficient enough to walk and jog on.”. My reasons for not doing this is that I am in the comfort of my own neighborhood, also, I have more resources to use at home. One of those is watching YouTube videos on how to abide by a health workout routine. The video I had watched showed step-by-step tips to start exercising. Another reason why I would rather exercise in order to lose weight at my home is so I can pace myself without having the stressors that are common with the college workload. Often times, it can be difficult to balance life with school. For instance, one of my friends asked me why pace matters as multitasking is not an issue for him. He told me this “Well, I have 2 jobs and juggle college in my schedule, why are you different? What makes your routine impossible?” When answering that, I had mentioned how I become easily stressed when multitasking as my new health journey is not simple. This shows that taking a year to reflect on your health can build not only your self-esteem, but it can also give you time to learn a healthy lifestyle. When I took that gap year off, I honestly improved my mental health and it felt great to do something to improve. Without having that year to change my life, my well-being would not be the same as it Is today. Sometimes, we all need time to figure out what we want to do during a gap year. I asked myself, what do I really want to do in college anyway?

To answer that question, I considered going to a technical school in order to get right into the practical work of it. All throughout my gap year, I was torn between being a graphic designer or a meteorologist. In doing that, I was glad I decided to take my time with deciding what my future would possibly entail. On the other hand, If I had just went to college and applied for an associate’s degree in graphic design or meteorology, it may have been easier, in retrospect. However, now that I chose to think about it more, It helped me immensely by looking into the practices rather than being stuck with a major I was not interested in. This proves that whether it’s a single gap year, or more, it is always acceptable to consider your degree in what ever time depending on your career. Eventually, when I decided I wanted to do graphic design, I was optimistic to take my time and know what steps to take in order to be prepared for college. All in all, using that gap year is the best decision for my life then. If a gap year is not feasible for your plans, that is completely satisfactory. Whether a gap year is helpful or not, it has its pros and cons, depending on the person that utilizes it.

Altogether, making that decision to take a gap year rather than going right into a collegiate environment helped me tremendously. When it came to my weight loss plans, It was crucial for me to prohibit my health from declining as I substantially improved my health and wellness in which I built a vigorous lifestyle routine. Additionally, I used that time to decide what degree I was more passionate about. All in all, transitioning straight from high school to college is fine. Although, what is the hurry? Time can be on your side, and it never runs out.
