The power of law to reconceptualize the way different events and participating activities are scrutinized and its ability to bring to life abstractions alongside the constant room for improvement and self-reflection as an academic discipline has developed my interest in both the professional and academic aspects of law. The work experience in my local district court involving shadowing advocates specialised in property, criminal and tort law allowed me to experience the everyday nuances of being a lawyer and honed my skills in writing plaints and case summaries whilst enabling me to understand how skills like the precision of language and sophisticated structure of events were common to all of them despite dealing with different issues. It also helped me realise challenges that came with practising law, due to the often long and inflexible working hours. Sitting in a trial helped me to come in face with the importance of lawyers to take up their legal responsibility and distinguish between legal and factual guilt. It also left a lasting impact as it made me realise that quite contrary to textbooks and oversimplified court cases, in the actual law court there is almost no certainty and the decision of the judges seems to be bending both, for the defendant as well as the prosecutor. My experience in the Linklater's Virtual Commercial Law program that involved drafting and circulating legal advice via email and researching specific points of law honed my attentiveness to detail and communication skills in addition to realising the responsibility that being a solicitor entails; all of which would be greatly helpful in the degree course as well as a professional career in the future. Sir David Williams Lecture on 'The Rule of Law and Human dignity' by Professor Jeremy Waldron enabled me to understand the importance of the Rule of Law and how the law, by presenting itself in terms of 'reasonable standards' along with trials and argumentation respects the dignity of people. By Reading classical texts like Oresteia by Aeschylus and Leviathan by Hobbes it became clearer to me how the complexities generated by the rule of law helped in availing a higher level of social order. Reading "Law and Life in Rome" by John Crook allowed me to appreciate the role played by the institutions of law in enabling a broader understanding of the way society was structured alongside the cruciality of principles of judicial flexibility and legal certainty. Attending an online summer program with the University of Oxford inspired me to read 'Great Debates in Criminal Law' and 'Criminal Law- Text, Cases and Materials' by Jonathan Herring where I was profoundly impressed by the comprehensive discussion of criminal law and the principles underpinning it. Studying about Aggregate demand and its components in high school got me intrigued about the psychological aspect behind the economic choices made by people and the significance of the rational choice theory in the economic analysis of law. My research concerning the deviations from the rational choice theory and the use of its insights in the economic analysis of law in domains like policy- making and doctrinal areas like property and taxation law was particularly insightful and I wish to continue exploring it further in university.Writing for my school newspaper has helped me develop sensitivity to the ambiguity of language whereas being a part of the drama community has developed my self-confidence and improved my communication skills in addition to instilling a sense of cooperation and teamwork, skills that are essential to have a good university life. In summary, my experiences, particularly work shadowing and extra reading, have convinced me that law is the career I want to pursue. I am aware of the responsibilities and intellectual challenges I am putting myself forward for, but I believe that my determination to study law will allow me to succeed.
