For my newest sociological study I’m experimenting on a flock of chickens from a local farm for the next week and their behaviors towards other chickens with deformities. My main focus is: When a chicken is alienated within its flock, it can develop suicidal thoughts. I chose this farm that I’m currently staying at because there is a chicken named Stanley who was recently introduced to the flock but has deformed wings along with a beak that’s also deformed.

In my first experiment, I observed the chicken’s actions towards the Stanley when they were all eating together. I noticed that the whole flock including the hen excludes the Stanley and stays away whenever he gets close/ eats near them. This resulted in the new Stanley to stop eating and walk around on his own for the rest of the day.

I also tested the chickens on their group dynamics and behaviors by keeping them in a small space for a certain amount of time. After observing them for an hour I found that they once again excluded the Stanley and even attacked him a number of times with the Hen attacking Stanley most. I believe that all of the other chickens are attacking Stanley and excluding him simply because the hen is, and there following the actions of the leader of the flock.

For my last experiment, I separated the hen from all of the chickens (Stanley included) during feeding time, to see if they continued this behavior towards Stanley, or if they would leave him alone because of the absence of the hen. Unfortunately, only two chickens ate near Stanley for a short amount of time before excluding him once again. So, despite the hen eating in a separate area from the rest of the flock, the chickens continued to alienate Stanley, as if it were something they were taught.

On the last few days of my experiment the new chicken had already stopped eating and trying to socialize or accept any sort of attention. This indicated that the chicken was already in the process of trying to inadvertently terminate itself. Since the chicken has been isolated and lonely for so long, there wasn’t much I could do to prevent it from dying. On the last day, during lunch when all the chickens were out walking around, the newest chicken had escaped the yard and crossed the road to its death.

In conclusion, if a chicken being excluded/alienated can cause the chicken to develop suicidal thoughts, then the chicken will carry out actions to inadvertently kill itself.. I believe these observations can be related to how society treats people with disability whether it physical or mental. For example, a student at a school with a physical deformity could be bullied and never talked to because of the way they look. Another situation where a student who is more of a leader in the school or popular is bullying a child with autism, so the rest of the school does the same, isolating the child with autism making them feel lonely and sad. Even adults do the same, abusing their power over people with disabilities because often they don’t have a voice in the situation, or are unable to defend themselves. The behaviors of the chickens can be related to the way some humans act towards people with disabilities.
