Marry Shelley, the famed creator of Frankenstein, highlights the true monster through the alienation of the newborn creature, the refusal to aid said creation and the horrific murders. The real monster behind these tragic events is the creator of the proclaimed monstrosity, Victor Frankenstein.

A contributing factor that influenced the creature’s monstrous acts is the creation’s alienation from society. The instant the beast reanimates, it is cast aside as hideous and dangerous. His father is the one that starts this stigma and remains the one to blame for the creature’s actions. “...but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.” Without any knowledge and having the needs of an adolescent child, the creation has nowhere to go. His only family abandons him in fear and disgust. The origin of the monster’s atrocious deeds begins here because he longs for acceptance and companionship. Searching for such needs, he tries to receive aid from the doctor. Although menacing in appearance, the creation talks and rationalizes like a gentle human being. “Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded. I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous.” In every aspect alone, he searches for aid from his father. The creature narrates his past pains and struggles, looking for some solitude and mercy from his father. Frankenstein, however, fills with disgust and hatred every time he looks at his son. This discrimination that Victor bestows upon his creation is what transforms the gentle creature into a hideous beast. Due to Victor’s hostility and prejudice, the monster performs all of his hate crimes. Therefore, who does that make the real monster now?

The monster’s blood lust and thirst for revenge swelled when Victor refused to help him, despite rationalizing and even begging for him to help. Miserable, alone and desperate. These are all the characteristics the creature is feeling. He needs someone to acknowledge and feel for him. Therefore, he begs his father for acknowledgment, but Victor rejects him every time. “You have made me wretched beyond expression. You have left me no power to consider whether I am just to you or not. Begone! Relieve me from the sight of your detested form.” Starving for acceptance, but he can’t fulfil his hunger. His father takes it away from him multiple times and feels no remorse for his actions. The creature begs his father, and when that does not work, he threatens his family. Still, that wretched human is too stubborn to acknowledge that this alleged monster is his son. Perhaps father-like instincts set in because he later accepted the creature’s plead. Despite the deal the two made, Frankenstein betrayed his son and destroyed the creation’s partner. “The wretch saw me destroy the creature on whose future existence he depended for happiness, and with a howl of devilish despair and revenge, withdrew.” Victor continuously describes the creature’s appearance and intent as malicious. Although one of those might be accurate, it is evident he merely wants a companion to accompany him. Frankenstein was on the verge of completing his task but then destroyed the only source of happiness for the creature. Frankenstein promised to assemble the sole product that would relieve the creature's agony, but then he demolishes it in front of his eyes. That is what a monster is, not a peculiar-looking being that just longs for love.

Every treacherous murder that occurred is Victor’s doing. He was forewarned multiple times by his creation, but Victor would not face reality. William and Justine’s assassinations are in the hands of Frankenstein. Victor is the one that planted the seed of loneliness and hate. “I too can create desolation; my enemy is not invulnerable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall torment and destroy him.” The creature solely knows this rage because of Frankenstein. The being didn't experience the luxuries of being loved and protected. Therefore, why should the creator of all this pain feel such indulgences? These necessities only come from loved ones. Therefore, if the creation could not receive such fundamentals from his father, he will gain happiness through someone else. The creature forces Victor to develop a mate and cautions him that everyone Frankenstein loves will die if he does not cooperate. “Have a care; I will work at your destruction, nor finish until I desolate your heart, so that you shall curse the hour of your birth.” Not only does Victor betray his creation, but he also slaughters the creature's source of happiness, which engulfs the creature with rage. Therefore, for revenge, the being murders Henry and Elizabeth. The creature warned Frankenstein of this, but the doctor carried out his idiotic way. Evidently, Victor is the real murderer of his loved ones.

Throughout Frankenstein, Victor views his creation as a dangerous, hideous monster. However, the true villain committing these heinous crimes is Victor. Frankenstein abandons, victimizes and hurts his lone child. No being can live such a life. All living creatures need to have someone in their life to care for them. Victor is warned of the potential deaths of his family if he betrays his creation. Frankenstein still deceives him and allows the murders of his loved ones to happen. That is the true definition of Mary Shelley’s horrifying creature, and his name is Victor Frankenstein. Many of the villains we fear today are born the same way as Victor’s creation. They get neglected, alienated and despised. Just like Victor, the parents are the ones to blame. They need to do a substantially better job at raising their children to be peaceful and loving. Therefore, before assuming whether someone is pure or evil, imagine how you would react after being subjected to discrimination, resentment and rejection?
