What is freedom in today’s society? If you’ve looked throughout the history of America you noticed that the topic of freedom is mostly about black enslavement. Freedom is a topic that will never die down, it will always be at the top of the list of controversial topics. People all over America are coming from different countries because they live in constant fear. Imagine living in constant fear of being killed because of what religion you believe in. I know I can’t and I am very grateful to be in a country that allows me to worship God. We always talk about how bad America is today due to all the racism. But how bad is it though? I know I can’t give an exact opinion about the issues in America because I’ve always had it pretty easy. There’s nothing that has terribly bad to happen to us. So why is it we always talk about America as this burden in the world? Freedom doesn’t always have to involve black vs white, freedom is so much more than just that.

In America, the value concept of freedom is the centerpiece of all conversations among Americans. In history class, we talk about freedom and how black people were able to gain equal rights as white people. Even on social media, you will see how people will still today post about how there is no such thing as equal rights as white people. They talk about white supremacy and white rights. But what we don’t talk about is the right to worship freely. How is it that the meaning of freedom has become only one thing? Freedom means so much more than just politics and being able to have equal rights. There are two definitions of freedom, one being physical and the other being internal freedom. As Pastor Justin Kendrick, from Vox Church, says, we have the wrong concept of what freedom truly is. He used an example about a very achieved man named Ernest Hemingway. He was a womanizer and by his fourth marriage, instead of allowing fate to take over, he decided to commit suicide. Freedom doesn’t always have to be physical, it can be internal as well.

As I was listening to a sermon by Justin Kendrick from Vox, he was preaching about being free to love. What does this mean and why does it affect me? Well like I had said before in the other paragraph, freedom can be internal too. One of the things that I thought was so cool that he points out was freedom doesn’t mean always having more options. A lot of time society tells us that in order to be free we have to have a lot of options. More options would mean that you don’t feel limited. Often times whenever we have more options we feel trapped because we can’t choose what we want. This theory can oftentimes be very contradicting because having more options does the opposite of freeing us. Freedom doesn’t always have to be something big, it can be small. I think in order to gain physical freedom, we have to look within ourselves and see what are we doing that is stopping our internal freedom.

As a Christian, I am able to find freedom through Jesus Christ because I’m not looking for something greater than what is given to me. Freedom should be something that we all should be able to experience, unfortunately, though not everybody gets to experience internal freedom. Freedom means that we the people have the right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. This definition isn’t just talking about physical freedom, it also talking about internal. I keep emphasizing this because freedom starts within ourselves. The racist comments start within the heart of the person. Freedom isn’t just a gift but it is a privilege to live a life that isn’t terrifying. We are able to choose what we want to do with our lives, set boundaries, and take control.
