Gender Pay Gap Essay Example

Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul all have one common purpose--seeing the devastation of women across the United States and wanting to put a stop to it. These women fought for Women’s Rights and to gain peace for everyone. They fought not just for the vote but for also being perceived in the same manner as men in all fields. Over time, Women’s Rights have evolved by gaining more recognition but the fight for equality still pursues. 

United States Women gained the right to vote in 1920 but many people agreed that it wasn’t enough to guarantee equality. In the article, “This Week in History: The Equal Rights Amendment”,  Alice Paul, a women’s rights activist decided to take action to justify Women’s rights. She wrote an amendment and year after year it was denied by Congress. It was finally approved in 1943 when she rewrote it to say, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex”(4). Women gaining the right to vote was a good start to equality but it didn’t secure that they would be treaty fairly in there day to day lives. The government needed to make sure that a law was passed to ensure that women could hold their own and no one can take that away from them. 

Throughout the years, the gender pay gap has been recorded in order to visually see the improvement of equality. The article “When It Comes to Equal Pay and Rights, Women (and Men) Should Never…” establishes that when the gender pay gap was reported, a slight increase was found. Since 2018, the payment increased 0.3 percent to 8.9 percent but this is said to still be marking the wrong direction for the gender pay gap, the ONS tells us, “this is not a statistically significant increase – its effect on women trying to get the playing field level is just as depressing” (4). Even though an increase was recorded, the rate of the increase won’t get anywhere. Women are still being paid less than men, even when they are working the same jobs. People need to work harder to ensure that women are paid the same amount so they can have the same opportunities as men. 

The 27th amendment was a very good foundation for the rest of the Women’s Suffrage movement to progress into what is today but there are still improvements in the future, like the gender pay gap. As time goes on, the fight for equality should greatly improve. Someday young girls will be able to transition into the real world and feel like they can do anything.
