Good Intentions in Myth of Pandora Free Essay Example

While trying to do good is something that all people strive to do, there are others who love to manipulate a person's good intentions to just hurt the people that have wronged them. People will always find a way to use someone for their own gain. Manipulate them into feeling that anything they have done is all their fault. I believe that in the stories of Pandora and Olympians she doesn't deserve the full amount of blame. 

The main purpose of Pandora was to hurt Epimtheus for siding with humankind. The Gods wanted to make Epimtheus suffer for his betrayal so they sent Pandora to Epimetheus. The Gods have taken Pandora and turned her into a pawn for a larger game that the Gods and Epimetheus had been playing. In passage one, the actions that Pandora had committed were what the gods had her do. Wanting her to unlesh evil pain and soul-crushing sorrow upon the world. As Pandora grew more curious about her purpose, she thought, ” What if the Olympians had destined her to be the one to open that casket, and had sent her to earth in order that she might bestow on this dear world, on the men who lived on it, and on her own magnificent Titan, happiness, and blessings which only the minds of gods could have conceived” (3). The god sent her to be curious, they manipulated her by sending her to earth to make her feel as though she was destined to open the casket. Using her purest of intentions against her. Her heart had only feelings of helping, then the day had come, the “day when Pandora, unconscious instrument in the hands of a vengeful Olympian, in all faith, and with the courage that was born of that faith and of love, opens the lid of the prion-house of evil”(3). Not only did Pandora mean well and to not hurt anyone, she thought that she would bring happiness to those on earth by opening the casket and that is what the Olympians wanted. The moment the evil was released her heart was poisoned and she felt every treacherous, cruel thought that could have been given.

Some people may blame her actions as completely her fault and that she just shouldn’t have opened the casket. What these people dine see is how the Olympian's manipulation clouded her judgment. She was an “unconscious instrument in the hands of vengeful Olympians” (3). She never wanted to hurt anyone she thought she was being helpful, that she would bestow happiness upon the world. She should not be fully blamed for the actions that were clearly placed by the Olympians 

Pandora had only felt shame for what she has done, In passage two not only her heartache for punishment but it is all that she wants. Why the Olympyimans have manipulated her to do their bidding in this war they didn't think of how it affected Pandora and how her confused actions would give her such regent now all the pain she caused when opening that casket. When Pandora tells Epimetheus what she has done, she says, “ I pray for punishment, and not for pardon ”(10). She feels so at fault for these implanted actions that all she wishes for is punishment for the Gods, all she asks is for “ Eternal absence would have been to be the greatest punishment. To be left alone. And face to face with my own crime. Just retribution. Upon me, ye Gods, Let you vengeance fall” (20). The Gods have made her feel at fault for the things she unleashed even though they were playing at this point of the game the whole time when they sent her to earth. 

In short, the Gods have no remorse for what they have done to her, making her feel as though she is fully at fault for what has happened. Only she was a pawn and a larger game, She was only being used. This just shows that people can take the good intentions of someone and use them to their own advantage.
