After World War II was over many Americans thought that the world would slowly go back to normal, but instead there was a Cold War that happened. The Cold War became a global struggle between capitalist and communist. The Cold War also grew out of failure to have a settlement from the United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union.

The United States was worried about Europe because communism was spreading, and the United States did not want that. Communism was the big reason that the United States was worried about the future of Europe. Europe went on a downfall and was struggling hard during the Cold War. The Soviet propaganda was very vulnerable one the impoverished massed in Europe, so communism was starting to spread through Europe through the propaganda. The United States wanted to limit engagement in Europe because they believed that there was communism being spread through the “heart” of Europe. “Communism was spreading rapidly through Europe” (American Yawp Ch. 25). Many people living in Europe’s attention started to spread to Asia and were focusing on the communism that was coming from Asia. Communism was not the only problem that Europe was facing, Europe was also facing famine, but that did not worry the United States at all. Once Europe allied with Russia to try and defeat Hitler, they soon became worried about Russia and the spread of communism.

Harry S. Truman came up with the Truman Doctrine in order to help many Americans living in the United States. The Truman Doctrine supported anti-communism all around the world. The Truman Doctrine also raised the minimum wage from $0.40 to $0.75 an hour, but he tried to get medical and health protection for all the workers, but they told him no. “Truman told Stalin about his new weapons of unusual destructive force, and he hoped that Americans would make good use of them” (American Yawp Ch. 25). The Truman Doctrine wanted to keep communism from spreading around the world. Truman was trying to show that he was going to keep his promises and control communism until he was publicly denounced by McArthur. Truman had many plans to help the United States, but McCarthy came into the picture and introduced McCarthyism and McCarthy became a United States Senator. Truman was not generally liked by many Americans because they believed that he was not going to uphold his promises. Also, the Truman administration had promised that the United States would do anything in their power to contain the spread of communism even if it involved the military.

The Truman Administration was not very successful because Truman was not in the office very long and did not succeed in all his promises. Truman was trying to contain communism, but McCarthy took over and was spreading the word around that people in the government were communist, so no one knew whom to trust at all. Also, with the United States was trying to contain communism, but what they failed to do was, keeping nationalism in their thoughts, and they ignored anything that had to do with nationalism.

The Cold War was awful for Americans, but Harry S. Truman failed to look out for all of the Americans since he was so focused on communism. The Cold War was mainly between the Soviet Union and the United States. All Americans could tell that communism was no good to have in their state, and they were trying to make sure that it would stay in the Soviet Union. The Cold War did reshape the world and all Americans. Overall, the United States just wanted to make sure that they could control the spread of communism in Europe.
