High School Students Are Not Ready For College Essay Example

If the purpose of high school is to prepare its students for high school, why is it that most high school graduates are not ready for college? High school graduates take classes to improve their skills. Skills they should have learned in high school but, for some reason, did not acquire those skills. They are taking these classes because of the lack of effort from the teachers and the students.

A good amount of high school teachers have no passion for teaching. They teach like it’s a burden to them. The way many teachers teach is boring and very makes it very difficult to concentrate. Some students can’t do well by learning through a book and just copying notes. The best way is through a passionate teacher. A genuinely passionate teacher will engage with their students, make jokes, make the class fun. If you can get a student excited to go to your class, you will see the progress a student can make. Most, however, do not teach in this way because it requires too much effort. Only those passionate enough will educate in this manner.

Educators will also ignore the kids struggling in the classroom and acknowledge the small amount that performs at a high level. They assign those kids not doing well to sit in the back and those striving in the front. By doing this, teachers are taking the easy way out and ignoring the majority of students. They also separate the average from the above-average by putting the “smarter” kids in higher-difficulty classes. They choose to pick out those already shining and ignore the “diamonds in the rough.” This only benefits the minority of students and ignores the majority. Instead of helping all students improve, only those already thriving are assisted and improved.

When a teacher tries to help a struggling student, they end up giving up on the student. A teacher will get frustrated and “baby” a student in need. Their standards become lowered, and it deceives, not helps, students. Students will now believe they are doing well because the difficulty has gone down. Reducing standards will keep a student at the same level. Being a passionate and patient teacher is the best way to aid a student in need.

The teachers will also continue to pamper these students by giving them too many opportunities. High school students are given a due date but get multiple extensions. How can they be prepared for college if they are under the thought process that life will provide them with unlimited opportunities? 

The Failure of the students is not all on the educators. The majority of the blame is on the students themselves. You can have a good teacher, but if you don’t have a good student, that does not matter. Younger people tend to be lazy, make many excuses, and make themselves difficult to manage. The amount of assignments given by teachers is very minimal. The students get lazy and procrastinate and let their projects stack up. Students won’t do tasks until the very last minute leading them to turn in below standard work; the teachers then accept it. The teachers give no consequences for sub-standard work leading to repeating this same process for four years. When finally called upon this unacceptable behavior is when the excuses come flying in. Some of the most common are “I’m too tired,” “I’m too busy,” “I’m in sports.”. Students are “too tired” from staying up all night doing nonsense rather than completing homework. Students are “too busy” scrolling through Tik-Tok or playing video games. Student-athletes knew what they were getting into when joining sports and should be responsible enough to create a schedule and make time for school. If you can’t do that, then don’t join sports. It does not stop there; students will make themselves so difficult to handle. They chose not to listen and overall have bad behavior. 

The lack of effort from both teachers and students is causing high school graduates to be unprepared. Teachers who fail to give one-hundred percent and lazy students who make excuses are a combination that leads to unprepared college students. The recipe for college-ready graduates is good teachers and good students. Good teachers are those who are passionate, and good students are those who make an effort.
