The Holocaust was around 1941 and ended around 1945. It was an event caused by the German Nazi’s to liquidate all Jews and non pure blood Germans. The event was ordered by the leader of Nazi Germany, Adof Hitler. It was executed by the SS ( Nazi Spescial Police) , Nazi soldiers and even the citizens of Germany. The over impact of the event helped create an awareness of mass killings across the worlds and it had created the word Holocaust. Before the Holocaust, WW1 had happened. Germany had lost the war and the people were losing morale. The leaders of Germany needed a scapegoat, they chose the Jews to take the blame. Thesis:  The holocaust has met the standard of the UN with the evidence of mistreatment, starvation, torture and the use of concentrations camps to kill the Jews.

The man who ordered the killings was the leader of the Nazi party, Adof Hitler. Hitler was born on April 20, 1889. He had fought in WWI and experienced the tragic loss of the war. Germany had needed a scapegoat to blame for the loss; they had decided that the Jews shall take the blame. Around the same time Hitler wanted to help Germany become stronger and to gain more power. So he decided to go into government and he tried to become the ruler of Germany but he lost the election. The German government appointed Hitler as chancellor of Germany in 1933. From there he had continued his pursuit to make Germany more powerful. He had help from the Nazi party and other supporters and soon enough he had taken over the goverment and had become the new leader of Germany.  Hitler’s first step was to get rid of any Jew and non pure blood Germans. To make his orders legal he had created the Nuremberg laws, which were laws to make discrimination against Jews leagal. Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) was one of the large events that expressed the hatred of the Germans against the Jews. Hundreds of Jewish shops had their windows broken, property vandalized and synagogues were burned to the ground. The Jews had been deported or moved to Ghettos. The ghettos were small towns that Jews were forced to live in, they were overpopulated, unhealthy and filthy. The people who helped identify the Jews were the SS (German Secret Police) , Nazi soldiers and even Germany’s citizens.  After the June 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union, led by Heinrich Himmler, the SS and police units began massive killing operations aimed at entire Jewish communities. Himmler was one of Hitlers closest men and he lead the plans of the killings of the Jews. They had started to kill many Jews, in later months Hitler and Himmler created a way to thoroughly kill the Jews. The use of gas chambers, mass shootings and furnaces were used to slaughter the Jews.

How does the Holocaust meets the United Nations criteria for Genocide? The criteria of a Genocide is as follows:

  1. Killing members of the group;
  2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
  4. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
  5. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

At the beginning the Jews were blamed for something they had nothing to do with. They started to get harassed and looked down upon. Their own government approved The Nuremberg laws which made it legal to discriminate and harass Jews. The passing of the laws helped form the next event; Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass). Intermarried Jews and they feared for their lives. The Nazi soldiers, police and citizens ignored thier cries for help and continied to harrass and assult the Jews. Things would only get worse for the Jews. They ended up being separated from each other, families ripped apart, children would never see their parents again and future survivors had no one to see after the war. They were thrown into compact train boxcars and transported for hundreds of miles to the concentration camps. In the camps the Jews were beaten, starved, experimented on and eventually killed. The most important part of this is the mass killings of the Jews. As the US and Russian soldiers took over Germany, they had run into something that was so unbelievable and inhumane. The concentration camps were filthy, cramped and had a sickening odor. The people inside were so skinny, the soldiers described it as only skin and bones. About 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust and an additional 2 million Romani gypsies and  homosexuals were killed. All of these events, actions al meet the United Nations criteria for Genocide.

The holocaust has met the standard of the UN with the evidence of mistreatment, use of concentrations camps and killings of the Jews. Adof Hitler and Heinrich Himmler lead the execution of the Holocaust and used all of their resourses to try to complete their Final Solution. The Holocaust was the spark that created the word Genocide. It had created guide lines of the definition of a genocide and helped biuld the provention of future genocides.. It enlightened other genocides that had taken place and will take place in the future. It educated the world about mass killings that had affected so many and it helped bring justice to all of the victims who were harassed, assaulted and killed in each Genocide.
