Homer and Cole Paintings Analysis

Homer and Cole are two amazing artists, who both made incredible pieces of art. one of homers most famous artworks is his piece the Gulf stream. The Gulf stream is an oil on canvas painting, made in 1899 during the period realism. In this piece you can see a man on a small boat that is sinking. In the left-hand corner of the painting, you can see a large ship, while on the right-hand corner, you see a water cyclone. In the painting you can see the dark storm clouds with little bits of light peeking through. Surrounding the boat are three large sharks, who look very hungry. Despite these troubles the man on the boat seems very calm as if he was accepting his fate, whether that meant the he would be saved by the ship, whether he would die in the water cyclone, or whether the sharks would eat him. In this piece you see blurred lines and multiple colors. One of Cole's most famous pieces is the Oxbow. The Oxbow is an oil on canvas painting made in 1836 during the period romanticism. In the painting the Oxbow we see two sides of a River. On the left side there are dark storm clouds and the land looks wild and untamed, while on the right side of the River you can see the sun shining, and the land is peaceful and inhabited. In this painting you see clean lines and it almost looks as though you are looking at a picture. The painting the Gulf stream and the painting the Oxbow are different in the ways the style of art they are, what was painted, and the period in which they were made.

Homer, whose full name was Winslow Homer, was an artist from the realism Period of art. Homer was born February 24, 1836 in Boston, and died September 29, 1910 in Maine. He went to school at The National Academy of Design, and made around one hundred and forty - five paintings. Some of his famous art works include The Gulfstream, Breezing Up, Snapped the Wing, and The Fog Warning. Interestingly, most of homer's artworks were of oceans. This was because he would often vacation in Florida, and the Caribbean. Homer style of art was blurred lines and non-defined art.

Thomas Cole was a famous artist from the romanticism period. Cole was born February 1, 1801 in England, and died February 11, 1848 at the age of 47. Cole went to school at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and made around one-hundred forty-three paintings. Some of Cole's most famous works include The Oxbow, The Voyage of Life, The Titans Goblet, and the Architect's Dream. In all of Cole's artwork you can see a specific style. His art always had sharp lines and defined subjects. Most of Cole's art works was inspired by the new world, America. He loved to paint the new world because of how wild and untouched the nature was.

Homer and Cole, though very amazing artists, had very different styles of art. While Homer used blurred lines and non-defined subjects, Cole used sharp lines and defined subjects. Another way Cole’s painting the Oxbow, and homer's painting the Gulfstream are different is what was painted. Homer focused on oceans, while Cole focused on the new world. Another difference between The Gulf stream and the Oxbow, is the period in which they were made. While the Gulf stream was made in the realism period in 1899, while the Oxbow was made in the romanticism period made in 1836.

In conclusion, while both Homer and call are both incredible artists, their artworks are different. Homer's artwork the Gulfstream, differs from Cole’s artwork the Oxbow, in the ways the style of art they are, The Gulfstream having blurred lines, while The Oxbow has sharp lines, what was painted, the new world, and the ocean, and the periods in which they were made, the realism period, and the romanticism period. even though both artists’ works were different they still both had very unique, marvelous artworks.
