Thanks to the pandemic the past year and a half has been a wild ride. Not only have I been affected, but the world has been through so much too. I went through so many things during the pandemic but the main three things that affected me the most was having covid, having to go through a mandatory lockdown and contemplating whether or not I should get the vaccine.

Over the past year and a half I was one of many people that caught covid. When I caught it sadly everyone else in my household caught it as well. Having covid affected me not only physically but also emotionally. The symptoms that I had just made me feel terrible overall. I was coughing non stop, I had a fever and bad headaches, I lost my taste and smell, and my nose was so stuffed up that I had to buy a humidifier. Even though I don’t have it anymore it’s still affecting me. My taste and smell still hasn’t fully come back yet. In order for me to smell anything the scent has to be strong, same with tasting. I’ve been sick before, but having covid was a whole different experience. A lot of people had this problem like me. In the article “Almost 50% Of Mild Covid-19 Patients Still Have Symptoms 6 Months Later” by Robert Glatter, he informs us about a study that was done on patients still having symptoms post covid. “The study found that at 6 months, 46% of patients had at least one lingering symptom, most commonly fatigue (22%), followed by changes in taste and smell (15%), and difficulty breathing (8%).  However, many of these symptoms quickly resolved, based on the data in the study. But loss of smell and taste, which typically developed around the fourth day after onset of disease, were some of the most enduring symptoms noted among the study participants” (Glatter).Having covid was really scary because there wasn’t much you could do, but stay inside and just ride it out.

Having to go through a mandatory lockdown was another thing that affected me. I remember when we first got the news about having a mandatory lockdown. It was shocking because nothing like this has happened to me before. I didn’t get to finish my junior year because all of the schools had to shut down. I missed out on prom, and other school activities and I wasn’t able to travel and compete in color guard. At first I didn’t mind school being shut down until we had to try and do it online which was so much harder than being in person. I was glad to know that I wasn’t the only one that felt like this. In the article “Students are falling behind in online school. Where's the COVID-19 'disaster plan' to catch them up?” by Erin Richards she looks into how students are struggling with online classes. “Virtual learning might be keeping Ruby, 14, and her family safer during a public health crisis. But it has made it exponentially harder for her to stay motivated and learn. Her online classes are lecture-heavy, repetitive and devoid of student conversation. Her grades have dropped from A's and B's to D's and F's. She stays up too late. She sleeps a lot.” (Richards).  I really took going to school in person for granted because when it came to online it was just me, I missed having my teachers, because they were always there ready to help if I needed it .  I also wasn't able to visit any of my friends anymore because of the lockdown .That sucked because me and my friends would go out all the time so it was sad not being able to see them.  Not only did schools shut down, but a lot of businesses shut down too. One of those businesses was my job so I had lost my source of income for a couple of months until they were able to reopen and call me back to work. My family vacations also got cancelled and I wasn't able to see my family. During the lockdown we weren’t supposed to go out unless we had to, which was mainly to go to the store. I think having the mandatory lockdown really scared people because I remember going to stores and seeing so many shelves empty because people were buying in bulk. That was really hard because sometimes we ended up having to go to more than one store. Having the mandatory lockdown really affected me because I was always out doing something,so when it came into effect it left me with nothing to do.

The last thing that affected me over the past year and a half was trying to figure out whether or not I should get the vaccine. I know when I first heard about the vaccine my grandmother and I said we weren't getting the vaccine like many others. We didn’t know whether it was safe or not and we didn’t know the side effects yet so we thought it was best to at least wait a while and see what things play out .   In the article “COVID vaccine hesitancy: Why people don't want the shot” by Jessica Rendall, she looks into the reason why people don't want to get the shot. “Some became fearful of a vaccine they thought was rushed or experimental, and they may have heard false statements about vaccines causing infertility or containing a microchip”(Rendall). At first I was one of those people that was hesitant. Hearing false statements like that was part of the reason why I didn’t want to get the vaccine.  What changed my mind was in November 2020 and December 2020 two of my grandmother's dearest friends died with COVID. One died on Christmas morning. Then right after my uncle and a close friend of my grandmother talked to her about their perspective about the shot and it made sense to her. She had that same conversation with me and we both decided to get vaccinated. I feel like talking to people close to you and seeing their perspective actually helps. The article “How to convince someone to get the vaccine” by Jessica Roy talks about how people are more likely to trust people they know rather than the government or news. She referenced a scientist Gray Hauptm who stated ““To address hesitancy,” she said, “people have to hear those local, personal and relatable stories about vaccinations, and how it benefits not just themselves, but how it’s benefiting others around them in their community.”(Roy). I agree with Hauptm on the fact that it’s easier to get someone to do something if they hear people's perspectives that they are close with. Me getting the vaccine influenced others around me  because shortly after that, my mom and sister  wanted to get their vaccinations as well as my best friend . Now there is the Delta Variant and a third shot. That leaves me questioning what I should do and will this ever end? When will life return to normal? There are more questions than answers, but I will do what I feel I need to do to help keep the community, me and my family safe.

This pandemic has really taken a toll on me and so many others. So many people have lost their jobs, got sick badly and even died. I think I can speak for myself and others when I say I’m just ready for all of this to be done and over with and I don’t want anything like this to happen again.
