How To Change Your Life Essay Example

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often,” -Winston Churchill. Everyday we are constantly evolving and finding ways to change not only ourselves and our circumstances, but those around us. We may do this by challenging the norm, or doing the exact opposite and following the rules. Either way, we are constantly transforming. People transform their lives by going against the status quo and not being content. 

When you are born you do not get to pick your life. You are born into your family and dealt the cards that you are dealt and you must deal with it. However, you do not have to be content with the life you were born into. You have the power to transform it. In the song “Alexander Hamilton”, he sings, “How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten/ spot in the Caribbean by Providence impoverished in squalor/ grow up to be a hero and a scholar?” Even though Hamilton’s mother was a whore and he was a bastard child he did not let those circumstances define who he was going to turn out to be. He took his life into his own hands and transformed it and became both a hero and a scholar. 

Similar to the way that Hamilton changed his life, when you are born you have the right to live your life as you see fit. In the Declaration of Independence, which is the foundation of our government, it says, “That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…”. This document explains to us that when you are born in the U.S. you have the right to pursue happiness. If you are not happy with the life you have then it is your natural, unalienable right to pursue the life that you want until you are happy. Therefore, by law you have the right to transform your life into anything you want. 

The poem “Democracy” by Langston Hughes can be interpreted in many different ways. One of those ways being that you can do what you please with your life. In the second stanza of his poem he reads, “I have as much right/ As the other fellow has/To stand/ On my two feet/ And own the land.” In this poem he is saying that you have independence. You have the same rights as your neighbor does. So, if you’re not satisfied with your current situation, then you have the right to go do something about it just like your neighbor does. 

In summary, it all comes down to you and the life you want to live. People are born in all kinds of different situations but they determine how the rest of their life will go.
