Immigrants Are A Necessity To America's Society Essay Example

For the United States to thrive, they must bring in more Immigrants into the country. Immigrants have been discriminated against by the United States and have been denied quality necessities for centuries. Immigrants are often discriminated against because of their heritage and culture. This issue should be the United States’ top priority. Immigrants have shown they can be an essential piece for the United States during this modern era.   

This country is built by immigrants, so they shouldn’t be excluded. The song, “The Great American Melting Pot’’, showcases how America is the land of immigrants and how this country is purely made of other immigrants. For instance one lyric states, “The principle still sticks; Our heritage is mixed. So any kid could be the president. You simply melt right in.” It shows the beauty and unity of America, knowing that we have all these diverse cultures combined. hence comparing it to a melting pot in which we threw all the diverse cultures and backgrounds into the pot being mixed and stewed, which ultimately creates America. Another example that shows this is “Where I’m From” by George Ella Lyon. Her poem signifies the differences and diversity between each other. An example of this was when she stated in her poem, “ I am from the dirt under the back porch.

(Black, glistening, it tasted like beets.)I am from the forsythia bush, the Dutch elmand.” This shows how special it is to appreciate the cultural diversity we all have as individuals and as a nation, and she could inspire countless people to share their diversity and write their versions of the famous poem. Immigrants in the United States should be appreciated and respected for their diverse culture and heritage instead of being oppressed and subjugated by fellow citizens and the government. 

Second, Immigrants bring innovative minds that benefit our nation. An example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She is an immigrant from Pakistan who is known for her advocation of immigrants all over the world, including her most recent avocation for the people of Afghanistan. An example of this was an article written by Malala published by the New York Times which stated her concerns about the women in Afghanistan in which she responded with, “They are asking for protection, for education, for the freedom and the future they were promised. We cannot continue to fail them. We have no time to spare.” Malala could bring new light and perspective to the U.S by spreading her opinions about topics that come from first-hand experiences, such as education for women, bringing awareness to dangerous groups such as the Taliban, and advocating for Immigrants. Another case of this is an Afghan interpreter who has remained anonymous for security reasons. He could use his knowledge of the Taliban and both the languages of Pashto and Dari to help the United States. He was also willing to put himself and his family at risk as he states here, ” Because of my service, my family is suffering right now. My family, my kids are telling me that, ‘Bad guy is going to come and is going to kill you, then us.’ And I keep telling them, ‘No, there are a lot of good friends that I have in America. I have made a lot of good friends and they’re going to take us, baby, you don’t have to worry about it,” he says.” The interpreter displayed loyalty, courage, and bravery to the United States and could use his first-hand knowledge and experience so this country could flourish. On a final note, Immigrants have proven on multiple occasions that they are important to this country and they are an asset. As displayed by both Malala and the interpreter, they could use their first-hand experiences and struggles to help benefit this nation.

In other circumstances, however, Immigrants have shown how they can be an issue by overpopulating and being a negative asset in the United States. A prime example of this is the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, a book that shares the journey of Amir and how his life transpired. In the novel, Amir and his father could overcome adversity after the Taliban took over their home; they fled to Pakistan and eventually America, but they dealt with traumatizing events through the process. When they first fled to America along the way, they dealt with more struggles, including sickness, and it was overcrowded, which is an issue because they could bring many sicknesses that could affect our nation. Another example that represents the issues immigrants bring was when Amir stated, “My eyes returned to our suitcases. They made me sad for Baba. After everything he’d built, planned, fought for, fretted over, dreamed of, this was the summation of his life: one disappointing son and two suitcases (Hosseini 124).” This shows how a majority of immigrants that migrate to the United States with no money and no plan often end up failing, taking up space, and causing the United States to lose profit and waste valuable tax dollars. Many immigrants have arrived in the United States and failed to reach the American Dream and have even been a liability to this nation by causing lost profit and wasting precious resources.

Immigrants have proven time and time again how much of an essential piece they are for our country to thrive. They have brought prosperity, innovation, and hope to this country, such as Malala and Amir. They both illustrate persistence and patience by going through their struggles and not quitting on themselves and not quitting on others, and that is something the United States desperately needs.
