We live in a globalised, volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world with the business scenario being highly volatile. To conduct business in this world, organisations need to be nimble and communicate with large number of businesses in a blink of an eye. Even in the same organisation, there is a need for proper communication between various departments. Hence the use of technology for communication is imperative for the success of any organisation. 

For a long time, the only way of communication between organisations and their employees was either formal letters or a phone call. To co-ordinate in complex work environment better solutions were needed. The technology improvement in the past decade have certainly helped with enhanced penetration of internet and electronics to the common people.

Businesses now rely on different facets of application for communication, e.g., e-mail, Skype, instant messaging, business phones, video conferencing application, etc. In fact, it has also made the process of communication more efficient and effective. With the help of video conferencing one can see the person in real time. As Peter F. Drucker rightly said "The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said".

The dynamic technological environment especially the pandemic has changed the organisational & inter-organisational communication landscape. People don’t have to be physically present in order to conduct business. One person can execute business at multiple location at one time by simply communicating through online channels. This enables quicker decision making and makes the hectic schedules easier to manage. Within the organization, people feel more connected to each other and it is easier to manage conflicts. 

Some other benefits of using technology for business communication is that it there are no boundaries for hiring people now. The bigger talent pool has enabled companies to hire people half world across and expect them join the organisation and start working in minimal time. The need for relocation and downtime has been greatly reduced. Even some employees prefer the organisation which provide them with a flexible work from home policy.

On the finance side, organisations are now able to outsource their work to other organisations which have cheaper labour. With the IT companies smooth lining their technology chains and enabling employees with modern technology, firms like TCS expect only 25% workforce to be at work place at a particular time by 2025. The need of office space for organisations will reduce exponentially and thus it makes sense financially to embed technology in each and every operation to earn more profits.

There is no doubt that technology has improved the speed of communication as well as the quality, but greater the reliance on technology for communication greater is the organisation vulnerable to cyber-attacks and total disruption of business which may cause serious losses. For example, a hacker group in October 2021 hacked numerous office 365 accounts of American and Israeli companies which effectively hindered their communications. There certainly is need to safeguard these online communication processes and install redundancies in case of failures.

Moving forward in the 21st century the use of technology is going to be a very important for each and every aspect of working of an organisation and communication is one of the most important pillars to make this work. Pandemic has certainly speeded up this process but even greater effort is needed to make available these processes to the masses and some aspects improved but overall technology is now an inseparable part of organisational & inter organisational communication.
