In The Maze Runner, James Dashner extends the idea that friendship will be the solution to disastrous problems by giving support, being resourceful, and giving a sense of belonging. The book The Maze Runner by James Dashner describes what the definition of friendship really is. In the book, a boy named Thomas gets sent to a place where he forgets everything in his life but his first name. Thomas goes through trials to figure out what’s really going on in the glade. He becomes friends with people who have a supernatural connection and a brotherly bond.

Towards the end of the book, there is a quote describing how friendships can be resourceful. “You did it, Chuck,” Treasa said. “We were so worried about the stupid code words, we didn’t think to look around for something to push-- the last word, the last piece of the puzzle.”(Dashner 58) For context, the Gladers were trying to get the code to work but they couldn’t figure why it wasn’t letting them through. The code they were typing was push. Chuck then told the Gladers to try pushing the button that opens the door for them to escape. This made the door open and the Gladers were able to escape the room. Without Chuck’s thinking, they would have never known what to do in that situation. Having friendships helps people think outside the box to find a solution to any type of problem.

The friendship between Chuck and Thomas had become such a powerful bond that it had started to become more of a brotherly bond, this brotherly bond made both Thomas and Chuck want to protect each other no matter what may come. Sadly, during the next few pages, Thomas and the other Gladers came across a boy named Gally who was being mind-controlled. Gally takes a gun and tries to shoot Thomas. Chuck jumps in front of Thomas saving his life. Chuck is killed defending Thomas. Thomas is holding onto Chuck's lifeless body,  heart shattered, with the feeling of guilt and sorrow flowing through his mind. At that moment Thomas became broken even though his memories were erased, the relationship he made with Chuck became such a strong brotherly bond. Thomas lets go of Chuck's body and looks up towards Teresa. “She reached down, grabbed his hand, helped him stand. Once he was up, she didn’t let go, and neither did he. He squeezed, tried to say what he felt by doing so.”(Dashner 60) What Teresa did at this moment of time was evident how friendships can provide support. Teresa is supporting Thomas because of the loss that happened to Chuck.

After Chuck's death, several men and women entered the building holding guns and killed all the Creators. Next, they escorted the Gladers to buses outside of the building to take them away. The Gladers are taken to a building where they are fed and given new clothing. The Gladers were having an amazing time eating foods they couldn’t remember eating before being put in the Glade. Thomas, accordingly, was still emotionless because thoughts of Chuck flowed through his head. Teresa and Thomas have the ability to talk in each other's minds, and Thomas was telling Teresa how he promised Chuck he would get to see his family and how guilty he felt. Teresa had enough of Thomas’s gloomy comments and told him, “He died saving you, Teresa said. He made the choice himself. Just don’t ever waste it.”(Dashner 62) At this moment, Thomas felt a sense of belonging and how he shouldn’t waste his life knowing his best friend sacrificed his own. Although Thomas will never forget Chuck he keeps moving on so he would never let Chuck’s death be a waste.

James Dashner’s book, The Maze Runner, was written to show how friendships will be the solution to disastrous problems by giving support, being resourceful, and giving a sense of belonging. He shows that friendship can blossom into a brotherly bond where they would protect each other's lives. James Dashner also shows how friendships can be useful during any situation, and how friendship can support a person emotionally. Nevertheless, the theme of The Maze Runner could be anything, but most evidence goes back to the idea of friendships.
