I believe that goal setting is important. Goal setting is important because it helps you succeed more, and it can help motivate you through things like school, sports, and work. If you want to succeed when setting goals,  you must set goals at high standards to get the full potential. Goal setting can also trigger new behaviors and can lead to better grades in school or even sports. More goal setting benefits include motivation. Motivation can help you to do better in school because the goal that you set motivates you. Based on research, those who set goals do better in school. Goal setting can get you a long way through life. Without a goal you will not be able to accomplish much in life. Bill Copeland once said “The trouble with not having goals is that you spend your life running up and down the field and never score”. In goal setting there are no negatives about it. It teaches you determination and to work hard towards something. Always set new goals. Lou Holtz once said “If you're bored with life,  you don't get up every morning with a burning desire to do things you don't have enough goals”.

It was a gloomy monday morning in San Antonio, and a sheet of clouds covered the sky overhead. The whole class had been called into Ms. Sobeys classroom for advisory. I walked into the classroom and took a seat on the floor. As Mrs Sobey, our English and literature teacher, began to speak about our new subject goal setting. She talked about why we should set goals, and why goals benefit us. At the end of the lesson she asked us to set our own goals. I thought about something I really wanted to accomplish. I know! I thought my goal should be running! So, I wrote my goal down on the piece of paper already excited to train for it.

“Now,” she said, you need to develop a plan of how you are going to accomplish your goal.”

I thought to myself a little and decided if I ran every Sunday and Tuesday I could accomplish my goal. As we rode home from school I was excited to get training on my goal. I could imagine myself crossing the finish line and getting first place. My goal was to run a time of 5:50 for the mile distance. The next day after school sure enough I was stretching and getting ready to run on my street. The sun was sweltering on me and little pieces of sweat were already forming on my forehead. Again, I started imagining me getting first place in a race.

“Hey!” my dad exclaimed, snapping me out of my daze. “We don't have all day.”

“Ok,” I said. “I’m ready.”

I started up my watch and began to run at a steady pace. I tried to keep a good form with my head always looking forward. The hot sun kept beating down on me. I could hear the wind pushing against the trees gently, and the birds chirping around me as if they were cheering me on. As, I got close to the end of my run I sprinted with all the energy I had left in me. I crossed the mile mark with a time of 6:49. Not bad considering the hills in my neighborhood loomed over me like mountains and the temperature was well above the eighties. Satisfied with my time, I walked back into my house and began my homework.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The birds were chirping and the wind was brushing against the trees, and the sun was peeking out of the clouds as if it was trying to see something. I was warming up by my front gate getting ready to prepare for my track meet that was going to be on a Thursday. Excitement built up inside me. Again I imagined me crossing the finish line getting first place. I was more determined than ever to achieve my goal. By now, the sun was out of the clouds and beating down on me. It was at least 90 degrees but a light breeze brushed past me. I was ready to run. I set my watch and began. Arms pumping, heart beating I finished half of a mile. Got to keep going, I thought to myself. I finished the last 100 meters with all the fuel I had in me. My time was 6:28. Nineteen seconds better after three weeks of training. Now the real race was coming in two days. The next night I could not sleep because I was so excited for the race ahead.

I woke up early that morning to the smell of baked sweet potatoes. I ate my breakfast hastily and got ready for the big day ahead. At 11 we left on the bus heading to the track meet. My race was at three. So, I watched all the other races before me and cheered on my friends. I heard the announcer say 1600 meter boys 5th and 6th grade. My heart jumped up into my throat. I was so nervous. I walked up to the register and signed in. A man with a hat and sunglasses told us all to line up on the track waterfall line.

He told us a few rules and then he said, “Ready,” we all tensed up, “set go!”

And he shot the gun. Of we went running I slipped into a comfortable pace at the front of the pack. Legs pumping heart beating, I finished the first lap of the track. Only three more to go I thought.

As I looked behind me when I was finishing the half mile I saw that I was far ahead from second place. The man with a hat and sunglasses told me my time for half a mile was 2:40. If I kept running at this pace I could achieve my goal. Now more motivated than ever I used all the energy I had left on the last lap.  I crossed the finish line and the man with a hat and sunglasses shouted my time

 “5:50,” he said.

I felt like fainting. There was sweat dripping down my hair and my heart was beating so fast. My legs felt like jello. After I recovered, I felt my heart swelling with pride. I have achieved my goal. Overwhelmed with joy I ran over to my dad and told him my time.

In the end, goal setting is important and can be used in many different situations.
