Technology is a great thing and has helped society achieve things that only existed in books in dreams, yet this does not mean that kids should have full access to it. As the old saying goes, “We are allowed to do all things,” but not all things help others grow stronger (New Century Version, 1987, 1 Corinthians 10:23). Just because something is good does not mean that we should leap into it without having the capacity to understand when enough is enough. The reality is that children have not developed the capacity to understand this and for that reason, an adult should control the amount of time and what the children are exposed to. If A child could understand and uphold this, he would not need a guardian, because this understanding would correlate to other subjects.

The reality is that a child aged five and below are like sponges due to still developing motor skills, language skills, and the beginnings of their personality. The brain is also still developing and all these changes make this age a very critical one. We must understand that many advances in technology are very recent, and we will not see the major consequences of it until enough time has passed. Even when that time passes the advances in technologies will be even more and this will make it more challenging to understand how it changed not only life and reality but how the thought process of things differs from before. What all this means is that exposing a young child who is still developing to technologies that impact his life in an unknown measure does not seem prudent or wise.

Studies have shown that technology is as addictive as gambling due to the release of dopamine in our brains. We also know that dopamine addiction changes chemical balances in the brain and makes a person more susceptive to looking for activities or substances that deliver high dopamine levels. What this entails is that we might be creating a generation that is easier to become a target to addictive products, activities, and drugs. These children might have to go into life already having a biological response to dopamine, due to their systems not releasing the correct amount because it is expecting to process big quantities of dopamine coming from external sources. This is the main difficulty of people suffering from ADHD and by allowing your child uncontrolled use of technology you might create this biological need.

In other aspects, technology without restriction also brings other dangers like porn addiction, exposure to sexual predators, exposure to a culture of violence, and accessibility to information your child might not be prepared to process. All these factors bring dangers that might cause damage to the thought process or decision-making. Even cartoons or kid's shows that are usually accepted as kid-friendly might have innuendos or hidden messages for children. Technology brings many positives and accessible things, but it also opens the door to many things that are not designed or desired for children.

Saying, “technology is bad”, is an erroneous statement, but at the same time technology does have its good and bad things. The internet is an unlimited source of information that grows by the second and is almost fully accessible. This makes the ability to filter the good and bad for an individual very difficult and almost impossible. This reality is even more present when we talk about what children are prepared to be exposed to. That is why it is so imperative for adults to understand that it is their responsibility to not only prepare children for their future but protect them today; in the present.
