Your personality defines you, being the combination of features and qualities that forms your character. You inherit it to some degree, but over the years it is shaped by the environment you live in. As you grow up and get older, your age changes, but does your personality change too?

During the early years of your life, it is no doubt that you emulate the traits of your parents and relatives. Kids tend to replicate their gestures and actions, which over time still remain at your core. Growing up, you begin discovering and experiencing a new world, which in the end stands as an essential factor that moulds your character. For instance, when entering your teenage years, the interactions with the outer world are contrasting and your perceptions change too. Friends, acquaintances and other people may and definitely are influencing your behaviour: from being encouraged to drink or smoke to something more positive, such as being challenged academically and being motivated to strive. Each experience is different from individual to individual, but ultimately one thing they have in common is the result, which is the change of personality.

Although the qualities and values taught by your family still remain fundamental, you gain knowledge and new information. This, along with the interactions you have, evolves into an idiosyncratic personality. Thus, a cycle is formed and the beautiful concept about it is the uniqueness of this process. Each individual experience shapes a new trait, which is ultimately passed down to your children. To illustrate, the notorious Christina Aguilera grew up in a toxic household, where she suffered various forms of abuse, but despite this she turned out to be different from her parents and managed to build her own personality as she got older. You are also responsible for this change of personality by setting your limits and goals or by wanting something better, regardless the environment you live in.

To conclude, over time, personality changes habitually and progressively, but that does not mean you turn into a different person. Despite all new environments, people and experiences, the individuality is retained at your core.
