For the informational interview conducted with Tyson McDowell there was a variety of insights and information provided about working in the field of venture capital. The most beneficial part of the interview was the depth provided for each question asked, which allowed for not only a basic response but also an explanation and in-depth analysis into each answer. The only part of the interview that wasn’t completely successful was that Tyson has so much varying experience and also that he did not attend college, consequently making his early career path likely significantly different from mine. Furthermore, this difference caused his experience to be more difficult to relate to the planning of my own career path.

During the beginning of the interview background questions were used to establish how he pursued this career, what experience he had, and what he currently did today. He responded with how he initially met business people through being a pilot and how that helped him start his first company in healthcare finance. This insight allowed me to see how even without a degree he was able to use resources such as the people he had met to create wealth through founding a company. Then he went on to talk about how he sold this company and then continued towards helping entrepreneurs and tech startups with funding and development.

When discussing how he helped these companies he brought up the value he had of being able to not only help manage the companies but also in writing software for them. This reinforced one of his main points of advice for college and business individuals in how important it is to be strong in business and software. With being comfortable in both you allow yourself to create exponential value for companies. When we were discussing this advice, I noticed how he kept reiterating the idea of being on the business side of software and data. When he explained the importance of this, he went into depth about how these large companies were incorporating data through AIs to make their prices, marketing, and entire business models more accurate and profitable. The information that I was able to take away from this was how using programming to tackle these business problems made you invaluable to companies.

His next set of advice was to understand the business problems being faced today and also in the near future. He went on to explain how incorporating reading MBA case studies and also how understanding data pipelines and everything about them from how data is gathered, to how industries use it allowed you to better prepare yourself for this career. This advice about the data pipelines was beneficial with my knowledge and current plan not including learning about them, although the MBA case studies are already incorporated into my classes and learning for college.

The last question that I asked of him was what he would change if he could go back and do everything over again. He went on to explain how he would not change his career path and that he was satisfied with his job and the companies and projects he has been a part of. He explained how there was only two aspects of his career he would change and that was that he would have gone to therapy way earlier and how he would enjoy the present more and worry less about the future. This leads me to see this career path as stressful and taxing on mental health. But also, he explained how he wouldn’t change his career so this shows that despite this cost to mental health that he experienced the benefit of working this job has outweighed these consequences.

Following the conclusion of this interview I had to reflect upon the information and opinions given. The information was very broad and covered many topics within the business field which made the interview not only applicable to one field within business but moreover to business as a whole. With the questions not only being about information but that of opinion and perspective the answers could vary from accuracy and that of other interviews on similar questions. This should not make the interview less accurate and trusted but rather just be taken into account. The responses given were typically tied into the technology and advances that business has taken and will be taking in the near future. This was directly tied into the advice given for myself and other business students in how we need to understand and use of computers and AI due to their increasing importance.

In conclusion, the interview was largely successful in helping to outline careers about venture capital. The questions were efficiently answered and allowed for many insights into the issues and positives of being in that career as well as how to better prepare and understand venture capital. With discussions also being into the future of this job, I was better able to see what learning today would help in this career. The interview was subjective since it was the experiences and ideas of one person and it is important to understand this since this may cause it to be not entirely representative of this career. In summation, this interview was valuable in the aspects of the knowledge and ideas expressed.
