Informative Essay: Language Development

From birth to 24 months, there are many language development milestones. At three months the child can smile when they see you, make cooing sounds, recognize your voice, and have different cries for different needs. By six months, infants can do much more in terms of language development. Babies can babble and make a variety of sounds, move their eyes in the directions of sounds, respond to the changes in your voice, notice that toys make sounds, and pay attention to music. By 12 months, babies try to imitate speech sounds. They may say a few words such as dad, mama, or uh-oh. Infants may be able to understand simple directions such as come here and recognize common items like shoes. They will also turn and look in the direction of sounds. At 18 months, children can recognize familiar people, objects, and name their body parts. Children at 18 months can say as many as 10 words. By 24 months, they will start to use simple phrases such as more milk or go bye-bye. Children at 24 months can speak about 50 words or more. They are also able to speak well enough to be understood at least half of the time by their primary caregivers.

Two to three year olds are very interactive with conversation and play. At age 2, children can say at least 50 words and follow most directions. Two year olds will combine words into short phrases and sentences. Children at this age can follow simple two-step directions. By 3, a toddler has the vocabulary of about 200 or more words. Toddlers can string together three to four words sentences and can be understood a lot better as they can speak more clearly. At this age, caregivers should be able to understand about 75% of what the child says.

At 4 to 5 years old, children can start connecting words like when or but. They can explain their emotions and how they're feeling. Children can explain that they might know/remember something. They start to understand and use transitional words like between, above, below, and top. Children are learning more adjectives at this age that can help them explain things better like something being empty or something being funny.
