Is Distance Learning Effective for Undergraduates Essay Sample

With the evolution of communication technology in digital era, the term distance education is also known as online learning, mobile learning or e-learning. Under this concept, the mode of delivering education has changed from a traditional classroom to a virtual classroom. Here instructor and students are distanced physically during the learning process. Thus the philosophy of distance education has evolved as "anywhere" and "anytime" delivery mode in reality. Even though the concept of distance education existed long before, it received a significant attention with the out-break of the pandemic. It opens up multiple opportunities for students breaking the barriers of a traditional classroom. The effectiveness of the distance learning for undergraduates is one of the debatable questions presently. Thus effectiveness of distance learning for undergraduates has both pros and cons.

The fundamental benefit of distance learning is, it allows students to participate for classes from any part of the globe only utilizing a mobile/computer and an internet connection. Students have the privilege to attend class with flexible time schedules creating work-life balance. Thus online approach offers for more flexibility in class participation. Moreover, online learning saves both time and money. It also promotes easy accessibility. Hence students can conveniently access their lectures, course materials & contents, class discussions and resources 24 hours of the day across the world. 

Distance learning own variety of advantages and provide unparalleled access to quality education. But there are several drawbacks associated with this mode which can jeopardize the success of online program. The traditional methods of delivering education for undergraduates was discussions, presentations, group activities, field visits etc. But with distance learning mode all these activities are restricted and interaction between the students and lecturers have dropped drastically, reducing the level of understanding between two parties. Lack of required infrastructure due to unequal distribution of resources in a country like Sri Lanka, can reduced the chance to receive quality education via this mode. Further, the effectiveness of online education will be directly depending upon the level of training, experience of the instructor for online delivery and teaching methods. In case, level of quality of the program will be reduced, if the lecturers are not adequately prepared to conduct lessons in a virtual classroom.

It's critical to acknowledge that some course content should not be taught online. Because the distance medium does not allow for the most effective context of learning for undergraduates. Courses which requires more practical exposure such as cookery, surgeries, dental treatments are disciplines where physical practice contribute to fulfilment of effectiveness of its learning objectives. Hence these courses are probably best taught for undergraduates in a traditional classroom context.

Distance learning environments broaden learning opportunities and deliver high-quality education in a range of formats and modalities. Today most of higher education institutes use this mode of education to serve their undergraduates. When considering the above facts, we can conclude that distance learning is not much effective for undergraduates. But one must carefully balance the pros & cons to maximize the benefits of this format while avoiding drawbacks that can arise from its limitations.
