John in Brave New World Essay Example

Huxley’s novel “brave new world”  is about a dystopian society where characters are in constant battle with themselves. One particular character is John the Savage. John is gifted or perhaps even cursed with knowledge about the two worlds. His gift allows him to ruminate about the current society he’s in and the old reservation. Although his gift can be a burden for John, it helps Huxley convey the message to the reader about individuality and the rumination of society.

In the first instance when Lenina goes to visit John, she tries to seduce them, however, John turns hers away and begins to preach to her about love and marriage. John’s action illustrates he doesn’t conform to the current new world societal norms and still believes holds on to the beliefs they have in the reservation. In addition, this allows John to express his individuality from the current society he’s in.

Moreover, John further goes on to show his moral dilemma with society's norms, by disposing of soma. Consequently, this makes the deltas charge him for doing this. Despite the fact, he tried to reason with. What John is trying to prove here is they don't need soma to stay sane. In doing so this prompts his individuality of not needing soma, unlike how it's a norm in the new world. What's more, this shows the differences between the old world and the new one. John rejects the values of the new world.

Furthermore, when John the Savage finally meets Mustafa Mond, a profound dialogue occurs between them. John begins to talk about how he wants all these values the old world has. In the conversation, Mustafá begins to tell John about all the tragedies freedom can have. This leaves John to make a critical choice of being controlled or having freedom. However, John accepts all the suffering of having freedom. This expresses Huxley's the individuality is conveying. In the manner that John is living his true self and wants

unlike he when he was controlled in the new world.
