Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Jonas’ world from The Giver?? Well, if you do, let us go over a few things that would be similar and different between the two worlds and communities. The Giver is a book written by Lois Lowry, it is a dystopian novel about a young boy named Jonas who is chosen by an old man to feel the pain and pleasure of the “real world “and is on the banned books list in the U.S. By comparing and contrasting the rules/laws, feelings, and assignments in, “The Giver “ our society it is clear that Jonas’ society is obviously the worst possible place to be.

A comparison of the rules/laws in Jonas’ society and our society discloses that we both have laws, ours are just less strict and provide more freedom. People in Jonas’ community cannot have more than 2 kids, one boy and one girl (pg.8). “He had never seen an aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community” (pg.1). In our society today, people can have as many kids as they want, although they should be sure they want them and can care for them. Also, in our society, planes can over whatever they need to, the pilots just need to get from point A to point B as fast as they can.

By examining the feelings and emotions in both societies, you can see that people in Jonas’ society suppress feelings to be the same. In our society, we are made and raised to be unique. “You Elevens have spent all your years till now learning to fit it, to standardize your behavior, to curb any impulse that might set you apart from the group” (pg.51-51). The children in the community are raised to not be different. The children in our society are raised to embrace their emotions, to show what they need or want. “It is just the pills. You’re ready for the pills, that’s all. That’s the treatment for stirrings” (pg.37). This quote shows that they are given pills to subdue the emotion or feeling of love.

In our society, we choose what we want to do in our lives. We can follow our dreams. In Jonas’s society they are watched throughout their lives till 12 and are assigned jobs to do. “No, I don’t think so. Of course the Elders are so careful with their observations and selections.” This quote shows that the Elder’s watch the children to select their assignments for them. “Though he had been reassured by the talk with his parents, he hadn’t the slightest idea what Assignment the Elders would be selecting for his future, or how he might feel about it when the day came” (pg.19). This quote reinforces my idea that they do not have the ability to choose what they want to do by revealing that he was put at rest about the fact the Elders would be choosing his job.

Now that you have seen a bit of information about Jonas’ society, would you still want to live there?? Well, if you do, there is something seriously wrong with you, but that’s beside the point. The Giver is a book written by Lois Lowry, it is a dystopian novel about a young boy named Jonas who is chosen by an old man to feel the pain and pleasure of the “real world “. All this evidence shown by comparing and contrasting the rules/laws, feelings, and assignments in, “The Giver “ our society it is clear that Jonas’ society is obviously the worst possible place to be.
