It was the 20th of December. The night sky looked even more beautiful up high in the clouds. It was an indescribable feeling. A mix of relief and pure joy. The city light shone in the darkness of the night. It was beautiful. Sitting by my side was my best friend. We had only been on the plane for a couple of hours, but she was already sleeping, and I found myself to be doing so to an hour later.

My best friend woke me a little later. “We’re landing in 10 minutes. Best to wake up now.” Leaving the plane was a sad moment for me but I knew that there were many more happy moments waiting.

We found a cab and drove to our hotel in Cape Town. The next 4 days were to be spent in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. We had planned the whole trip. There was a total of 4 stops on out trip. But first we had to enjoy some delicious food.

We had heard from a friend who had recently visited South Africa that restaurant “Salsify” was a must place to eat at, so it was no hard decision to decide where to eat our first meal in South Africa. We had already reserved a table at the busy restaurant and sat down to enjoy our three-course-meal. It was delicious and did not disappoint! We decided to head back to the hotel since we were still jetlagged.

The next day our first stop was at Robben Island a little north of Cape Town. Robben island was where Nelson Mandela had been imprisoned for 18 torturing years. We received a 3-and-a-half-hour tour where our guide taught us more about Mr. Mandela and Robben Island. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the South African history!

When we awoke the next day, we headed straight to Johannesburg. We had bought a one night stay at a near hotel. There we met a young couple who we easily befriended. They told us about South Africa and its culture. They were nice and friendly, and we exchanged phone numbers to keep in contact.

The previous day we learned a lot about Mr. Mandela, and we became interested in the history of apartheid. So, we decided that the first thing to visit was the apartheid museum in Johannesburg. It was a disturbing but learning experience.

We then went shopping because what is a vacation without shopping?

Coming back to the hotel we were both exhausted and quickly went to sleep.

Wildlife in South Africa was always something everyone who had visited South Africa had seen. And we too wanted to see it up close. So, we took a 2.5-hour drive to the Pilanesberg National Park. There we saw Africa’s Big Five. It was a fantastic experience coming from someone who always has loved animals.

We left early the next day to go to Durban. Our last stop was at uShaka Marine World. Upon arriving at the theme park, we went straight to the aquarium with the dolphins. They jumped, danced, and made everyone’s day light up with joy. We were there for another hour or 2 before we had to pack our bags and fly back to Denmark to celebrate Christmas. But this was definitely the best holiday of my life!
