Introduction

Lack of sleep is detrimental to the physical function of the body. Research was conducted on a group of college students, according to their report, they found out that sleep deprivation is common among students and is associated with poor academic performance and physical dysfunction. According to their measurement and result, A randomized controlled crossover study was carried out with 64 participants [58% male (n = 37); 22 ± 4 years old (mean ± SD)].

Participants were randomized into two conditions: normal sleep or one night sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation was monitored using an online time-stamped questionnaire at 45 min intervals, completed in the participants’ homes. The outcomes were cognitive: working memory (Simon game© derivative), executive function (Stroop test); and physical: reaction time (ruler drop testing), lung function (spirometry), rate of perceived exertion, heart rate, and blood pressure during submaximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Data were analyzed using paired two-tailed T-tests and MANOVA. Reaction time and systolic blood pressure post-exercise were significantly increased following sleep deprivation (mean ± SD change: reaction time:

0.15 ± 0.04 s, p = 0.003; systolic BP: 6 ± 17 mmHg, p = 0.012). Although there was physical dysfunction, there was no sign of cognitive and cardiopulmonary changes. ( Yusuf. P, et Al.,2017 )

This illustrates the fact that lack of sleep is detrimental to health, not only does  it leads to stress, it also affects individual performance, I would use mysalf to better illustrate this explanation, I was sick last week and I wasn’t feeling fine, after some medication, I got better but I realized that I haven’t done my people assignment, the work was much because I was offering two courses, which both the course had an assignment and discussion. In addition to that, I also had to do my job and my house chores, I didn’t know where to start, I had to sleep late at night by 3:00 pm including today as well. This made me tired, I was stressed not only because of overthinking but also because of the workloads that combined. In addition, I haven’t done much exercise since this week. I do have back pain and neck pain and I am also taking drugs for the pain. This summarizes the fact that lack of sleep is not only detrimental but also contributes to psychological factors, biological factor as well.

Conclusion

Lack of sleep contributes to negative factors which might damage the health system as time goes on. These negative factors include stress, depression, anxiety, tiredness, etc. In addition, frequent lack of sleep exposes the heart and the body to diseases. Also, the research and my experience are used as a case study to illustrate how lack of sleep is detrimental to health.
