With leadership, Beowulf motivated people and achieved success. The poem Beowulf is about the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. Epic heroes, like Beowulf, have superhuman characteristics. Beowulf exemplifies courage, loyalty, and strength throughout the poem. In the past, Beowulf had defeated numerous creatures and gathered treasures from them throughout his journey. He sailed across the sea so that he could protect the Danes and their king Hrothgar. Beowulf defeated a creature named Grendel out of kindness because he had been terrorizing Hrothgar and his warriors for twelve years. After defeating Grendel, Grendel’s mother wanted revenge so she tried to attack Beowulf. Beowulf was victorious and killed Grendel’s mother with a magic sword. Beowulf soon died during a battle with a dragon, but still was victorious and killed the dragon with the assistance of his only brave warrior named Wiglaf. Therefore, Beowulf demonstrates heroic characteristics by victoriously defeating numerous creatures.

Beowulf was courageous and never gave up even when death was very close. Firstly, Beowulf takes initiative and sails across the sea to approach Grendel, the monster terrorizing the Danes. The poem states, “In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac’s Follower and the strongest of the Geats- greater And stronger than anyone anywhere in this world- Heard how Grendel filled nights with horror And quickly commanded a boat fitted out, Proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king” (Beowulf lines 109-114). Beowulf protected the warriors and the king of the Danes simply out of the goodness of his heart. Secondly, Beowulf courageously fought Grendel with his bare hands and defeated him. This shows how courageous he was to fight a monster bigger than him with nothing to protect himself. Lastly, he showcases bravery and courage by continuing to fight the dragon even though he had a fatal wound. Beowulf was bleeding out but still defeated the dragon. Therefore, Beowulf is the hero of his warriors and the people of the Danes because he is brave and courageous.

Protecting his warriors and defeating creatures, Beowulf showed his loyalty by always fighting the best he could and never giving up. Beowulf traveled to the Danes to defeat Grendel and was victorious. Willing to fight the monster alone, Beowulf had told his men to stay back. He portrayed loyalty to Hrothgar and his men by protecting them. Also, before Beowulf went into the mead hall to fight Grendel he told Hrothgar to take care of his warriors and give all of his treasures to his king Higlac if he dies. The poem states, “And if death does take me, send the hammered Mail of my armor to Higlac, return The inheritance I had from Hrethel, and he From Wayland. Fate will unwind as it must!” (Beowulf lines 186-189). Beowulf wanted all of his treasures and inheritance to go to Higlac if he died, which shows how loyal he was to his king. Beowulf was very loyal to his men and never left them to fight by themselves. He was willing to risk his own life in order to save others. Beowulf shows his warriors that it is important to stand up for yourself and others through the loyalty that he portrayed.

In order to defeat many creatures and exemplify hero characteristics, Beowulf had to be very strong. During the battle with Grendel, Beowulf easily ripped his arm off and defeated him quickly. Also during the battle with Grendel’s mother, Beowulf swam in armour and held his breath for a very long period of time, which takes an immense amount of strength. (quote about how he swam with armour) Beowulf used a sword forged by giants to kill Grendel’s mother. The sword was presumably gigantic and heavy, which shows how strong he is. While being prideful and loyal, Beowulf defeats creatures using his strength.

In conclusion, Beowulf exemplifies many heroic qualities and leadership skills. He showed loyalty to his men and the people of the Danes. Portraying strength, he defeated numeros creatures and was victorious with all of them. Also, he was courageous and never gave up even when he was about to die. Beowulf was an epic hero and made lots of people proud. He accomplished so much, was very hardworking, and trustworthy. Therefore, Beowulf demonstrates the perfect example of a hero by never giving up, being loyal, courageous, and strong.
