I am going to try my best to make this as short as possible. So, let’s get into the topic. Let’s just say, I also had a time when I was extremely addicted to Instagram. Especially in lockdown, when none of us had anything to do. There was a point where every 10 minutes I used to scroll through reels. My Instagram usage time would be about 5-6 hours and I very much knew its neither good for your health, eyesight or brain. But now, I have reduced my Instagram usage time to about an hour or two and I am working on it to get it to 30 minutes to 1 hour which I will do extremely soon.

Here are the top 3 things which happen when you get addicted to social media (more details after the points)

  1. Jealousy
  2. Less creativity
  3. Unsharp eyesight

Let’s talk in detail above the top 3 points and then I will give the solutions for the addiction

  1. JEALOUSY

Now, while scrolling through reels, you see so many new and different people, with various things they have with them, maybe pets or a laptop or other stuff. Personally, I never really got jealous of other people so I am safe from this zone, if in case you do get jealous, this is your sign to stop scrolling so much on Instagram.

  1. LESS CREATIVITY

Next, I am pretty sure you all have English classes, so you will have a lot of writing skills and other related English stuff. You may be wondering how is social media is affecting this! Now, in reels mostly people do the same kind of thing and named it ‘trends.’ So, you tend to copy others, which is the same thing which reflects here, you go to go google and search for it. Recently I have also been seeing a lot of reels where they show bots writing for you or how to get google form answers. Please don’t get carried away by that. There will be a day when you need to face the offline world.

  1. UNSHARP EYESIGHT

The last, we know that when we sit too much on our phone it affects are eyesight. This point is mostly self-explanatory. And especially in Instagram you tend to scroll without seeing the time and you don’t know how and when the time passes so quickly.

That’s all the side effects. After reading one whole page your questions will be, how do I fix this? Well, here are few things you can do which even I did to help you limit the usage.

  1. Switch off notifications

This is point is applicable only if you have your Wi-Fi on. If the Wi-Fi as well as the notifications is on then it tempts you to check Instagram every time a notification pops up.

  1. Avoid using phone the first thing in the morning

I am pretty sure you would have heard about this ‘n’ number of times. But this has to be repeated. Now, here’s why. When you open Instagram first thing in the morning and you see sad/bad news which really you don’t like / support. It tends to ruin your entire day because that’s the thought which will be stuck on your head.

  1. Meditate

Meditating the first thing in the morning, brings all your thoughts in place. It helps you remain calm throughout the day. It so happens when you get frustrated you go and surf Instagram. Meditation helps controlling your thought.

  1. Allot A Time

Have a time limit set, maybe 1 hour a day so that you know that you have used this much of social media and it’s the right time for you to stop surfing Instagram and maybe go on a walk or just simply listen to music.

  1. Detox once a week

The most important thing DETOX. So, why is detox so important? This is to refresh your mind and have a “me day” or a “family day” which helps you do a lot more things which you love. I am pretty sure you all know what detox is, for those who do not know, it’s basically where you stay away from social media for a day. I usually prefer doing this on Sunday. Mostly because this is when everyone is free in my family so that we can spend time together.

These are the 5 top things I did and I still am to limit my usage more. Hope you found this helpful! I will see you guys the next time! Bye and thanks for reading :)
