Looking for Alaska by John Green Book Analysis

The novel Looking For Alaska was written by John Green. The novel is young adult fiction, the novel is fictional. The novel is about a male named Miles also referred to as “Pudge”. This novel is based around Miles' time at Culver Creek Boarding School. Looking For Alaska follows Miles as he meets a girl named Alaska Young. As the novel progresses, readers can see how Alaska and Miles' relationship builds over time, and how Miles deals with Alaska's disappearance. Looking For Alaska shows the mental anguish that Miles has experienced. Miles has to grieve as he realizes he might not find Alaska. In the end, this novel shows how death is a natural part of life. 

The novel Looking For Alaska takes place in Culver Creek Boarding School in Alabama, in 2005. In this novel the protagonists are Miles and his friend group, the antagonists are the Weekday Warriors. The Weekday Warriors pull various pranks on Miles, Alaska, and their friends. Miles is a round character, as we know his thoughts and feelings about his crushes, his desires, and his overall problems. Alaska is a static character, she stays the same throughout the whole book, a girl with trauma who just wishes life would get better. There was no change in her moral or ethical; values throughout the novel. In brief, Alaska’s character experienced no change throughout the novel at all. 

In the novel Looking For Alaska, the storyline follows a teenager named Miles, who gets close with a girl named Alaska then has to traumatically find out the way Alaska died in an investigation. While Miles is getting close to Alaska, tension with the Weekday Warriors rises. Miles is affected deeply by the death of Alaska and can’t tell whether or not she died by suicide, or if it was driving intoxicated. This investigation rips Miles apart mentally and tears Miles down. As a result of that, Miles starts feeling guilty. Miles wonders if he could have prevented Alaska's death. In addition, Miles had made no lead way through the investigation so he can only hope to get a little bit of closure. After all the pain and suffering, Miles can’t even turn to his friend while grieving because they have different ways of coping. In the end, the police can’t tell whether Alaska died by suicide or a fatal car accident. 

The novel, Looking For Alaska, shows how death is a natural part of life, and even after tragedy, you still have to keep going. Miles' friends stuck together to find out how Alaska died. They stayed together through the investigation supporting each other patiently. With Miles still grieving, he continues helping search for the investigation. Miles and his friends are learning to overcome tragedy. They both just wanted to find out what happened without the investigation mentally scarring both of them. 

Overall, I enjoyed this book, as it takes you through so many emotions from adoration, anxiety, fear, horror, sadness, and relief. This novel contains vivid details and substantial imagery. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read mysteries. This book is made for adults, as it contains situations that involve alcohol, smoking, hazing, and drugs. The descriptive writing that is used in this novel, enhanced the sensation of the emotions that were flowing through. My favorite part of the novel was when they put Miles on a mattress and made him float on a lake. This part of the novel contained hysterical scenes. My least favorite part of this novel would have to be the ending. It leaves you with the question that no one can answer, how did Alaska die? Overall, Looking For Alaska is a heart-wrenching novel about a teen who enters a boarding school and falls in love, just to have to investigate how the love of his life died. This book will grab the reader's attention and will leave you with so many questions.
