Lucy Gray sang a soft song as she sat in a tree. It had been three weeks since she had left Coriolanus. She had found a letter sent to Coriolanus by Dr. Gaul  who praised his work in betraying Sejanus. Once she learned Coriolanus’ true nature she learned that she couldn’t trust him either, so she ran. She wished she could write to the Covey but that would only put them in danger. Just then as she was humming her solemn song, CRASH! The branch which Lucy Gray was sitting on had broken. She plummeted to the ground. As she dusted herself off she heard voices in the distance “Peacekeepers!” She muttered to herself. They had been trailing her for days. If they caught up to her there was no way she would survive. She ran down to a nearby stream and submerged herself in the water. By the time the peacekeepers left her face was turning purple. She quickly rose from the water and scurried up a nearby tree. She searched for a comfortable branch to stay on for the night. When night fell she tied herself to the tree with a vine so as not to fall. The night was cold and she shivered throughout the night. Her mind wandered as she tried to sleep. She had no trust left for anyone except the Covey who she knew deep down she would never see again. Billy Taupe was still on her mind. He and Mayfair’s lifeless bodies circled around Lucy Gray’s head. Even though she hated Billy Taupe, she still felt guilty for his premature death. It wasn’t her fault she wasn’t even the one who shot him, but still it weighed her down with guilt. She began to feel even colder at the remembrance of all the ones who had died. She remembered how kind Sejanus had been to Maude Ivory. Now all Lucy Gray had was herself and the mockingjays surrounding the forest. In the morning she began to head north once again. With each step she thought of the better life she would have once she got out of the Capitol’s reach. She still had hope about finding other rebels and living among them. It was cold but still Lucy Gray kept going. When she finally made it she decided to live in an old shed she found. As winter dwelled upon her she began to make blankets and coats out of anything she had. She used grass, thatch twigs, and even her own hair. Winter passed and spring came. She walked outside only to hear voices. She ran into the shed at the thought of peacekeepers. She tightened up as they walked into the shed and towards her. “These aren’t peacekeepers.” She thought to herself. She slowly lowered herself from the ceiling. “I mean no harm.” She said softly. “Hey, you're that Hunger Games victor!” Said the boy wielding the gun. He and the girl next to him slowly lowered their guns. “I’m Leaf and this is my sister Branch.”The girl smiled sweetly, “And these are our cousins Sap, and Root.” “Hi, I’m Lucy Gray.” Lucy Gray was unsure if she should trust these people but she had to take that risk if she wanted to survive the next winter. “If you want you can stay here tonight!” Said Sap, who was obviously the youngest. “And you can come hunting for food with us in the morning.” Lucy Gray smiled and said “Sounds great!”
