Middle Ages as the Age of Faith Essay Sample

The Middle Ages was a time that had a lot of different aspects to it, but mainly it was a time for achievements and authority. So many different things that happened that it could be given many titles. The title probably most given to this age could be the Golden Age. While yes this time period was a time for achievements, these achievements were driven by people trying to do “God’s work” or making these laws to get people to follow God’s laws. They were able to make these achievements happen, because they had access to the technology and power needed to do these achievements since they were in the church and the church had great influence and authority during this time period. The Middle Ages can be considered the Golden Age because of the achievements in law, but it should really be considered an Age of Faith because who made these achievements and how they did it through the church.

The title the Golden Ages wouldn’t be inaccurate for this time period. There were many achievements during this time that did make it golden. One such achievement was a change in law, sort of. There was a document called the Truce of God. This made it so that no one was to commit crime or injure another person on certain days or in certain time periods. Another achievement was in record keeping. It’s greatest achievement was the preservation of the knowledge that came before it’s time. During this time it has protected the treasures of what came before. This was a time for progress and success, but it’s who and why they did these things that makes it really an Age of Faith.

The Truce of God was done by a Church Council in 1083. It was a time to be peaceful. These days would be church festivals or days of fasting. Another time you couldn’t injure someone was during The Advent Season. These days were used for fasting, feasting, or just resting. The Church also kept many records in monasteries and churches. This is because the Church was the only institution that was still around after the fall of Rome, in Europe.The Church and the people in it had much authority and was an integral part of European society. They did these things in order to enact God’s laws and commandments.  

The Church dates back to Roman times. They were a powerful and respected authority in the ending days of Rome. So when Europe was in chaos and had separate small towns that were self sufficient, the one thing that connected them all was the Church. The one institution still standing in Europe. It was well organized and structured. They made many traditions and requirements you had to follow in order to “get into heaven”. Even though Christ teaches us we could never buy our salvation, that’s why he died for our sins, and that it is free and we don’t have to do anything.The Church was able to do these great things because they were the only well organized institution that held power for a very long time.

The Middle Ages was a time for many things. There was sickness, fighting, corrupt people in power, and much more, but mainly it was a time for progress and power. The changes in law, keeping of records, advances in medicine, discoveries in science, and the pondering on theology and philosophy made it a time that could be called the Golden Age. Yes, this title is accurate, but it’s the people who did and why they did them that actually makes it an Age of Faith.
