Left, left, left, right, left. Saying these words sums up my whole childhood. Repeating it over and over again from when I was 6 walking to school up until now being 17, saying it because it's just a natural saying to me now.

Being a military child has had its ups and downs. Leaving my hometown was the toughest move I have ever had to make. I had to leave my loved ones and friends behind. I think the thought that killed me more was that I would have to be the new kid at a school and have to learn how they teach in the  new state. Being only 11, I was already thinking about how this move would affect my grades considering I was a straight A student. After moving to Texas, I had to adjust to everything new around me. From meeting new people to meeting new teachers and having to adjust to the surrounding environment.

Meeting new people was always a struggle for me. I always wondered what was the point of making new friends if I was going to move eventually and never visit them again. I eventually put down the barrier of not making friends and just started thinking about the positives and how I could have friends all across the country. Keeping this in mind, by the end of my 5th grade year, it was time to pack up again. This time, I was leaving for Arizona. Having to be the new kid once again, having to make new friends, and leave the ones I just made behind. This idea definitely took a toll on me. I was tired of moving around, I just wanted a place to feel like home just once, where we could stay for longer than a year.

It’s easy to say that being a part of the military family is fun because of the traveling but that’s false. It’s tough trying to find somewhere to settle and finish the school year out and actually be able to stay. I was able to stay in Arizona for longer than a year. This place felt like a second home knowing I was able to stay until I graduated from high school. I was finally not going to be the new kid or the one that people would whisper about in the halls. I got my grades back up to straight A’s and accomplished my goal of getting an academic letter for having a 3.8 or higher GPA. Arizona was definitely a good place to settle because I was able to succeed knowing that I could. I just needed somewhere to call home.

Being a military child makes you grow up faster than any usual teenager would. My childhood felt like it was cut short because I had to grow up with my mom not around most of the time. Deployment is tough on children like me. Being apart from a parent for a long period of time feels like you have been abandoned. At a young age you don’t understand what deployment is until you have grown up fully to understand the meaning of the word. Being a bit more mature than kids my age, I always felt out of place. Wondering all the time why kids thought certain sayings were funny, definitely made me feel different. It was a blessing and a curse at the same time.

Looking back now, I see the little scared girl I used to be and how much I have grown. Now, I have a backbone where I stand up for myself and not let other people's opinions set me back. Being a military child is definitely a one of a kind experience, that sometimes feels like it's worth the pain but at the same time it’s not. The military is my story from the deployment to moving to all different kinds of states. I wouldn’t want my story to be any different because this experience shaped me into the person I am today. I am proud to call myself a military child.
