Motivation Letter Example: U-RISE Program

I’m 21 years old. I’m currently getting a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology. In the future, I see myself as a physician-scientist. My plans consist of continuing my studies with an emphasis on Immunology and Infectious Disease.

First, I decided to study Microbiology because of how important and broad this field of study is. Studying the ways microorganisms can impact our lives is fascinating for me. I’m a third-year student and will likely graduate in 5 years. For that reason, I would like to participate in the U-RISE program to further my knowledge and gain valuable research experience in the time I have left at the university. Furthermore, I know this program will help me get further in my career by giving me the tools I need to succeed at both the academic and professional levels.  

Throughout my years at university, I have developed an interest in Immunology and Infectious Diseases. Immunology intersects with multiple areas of biomedical science and is fundamental to the development of therapies and vaccines. I aspire to be able to do research and positively impact the world with my findings. I also want to have the opportunity to treat patients individually. Therefore, my main goal after I graduate is to apply to universities that provide MD – Ph.D. programs.

After the MD – Ph.D., I would like to work at a research institution like NIH or the CDC. There I will be able to do research and apply it to enhance the quality of life of others. Additionally, I want to prove that women, especially Hispanic women, belong in STEM fields. I would like to be a role model for other women that would like to pursue a career in STEM. 

Finally, I do comprehend the difficulty and the compromise needed to be able to successfully get an MD – Ph.D. However, I am a hard worker, and I am determined to reach my goals. Additionally, if I get the chance to participate in the U-RISE program it will help me better prepare for that next step in my life. No matter what, I will always strive to do my best and do everything I can to achieve my goals.
