My last duchess by Margaret Atwood is based on the same poem by Robert browning. The central idea of this story is to show a young girl trying to understand the poem and what it means to her. Later she realizes the poem she isn't concerned about is her future. The world in my view is to be successful in life  and overcome obstacles along the way. A positive reputation is a part of being successful, being respected, and determination. Throughout the text miss bessie intolerance for passing marks stating that “she wanted the top marks from us. She had the reputation of the school to uphold and also her own reputation.” Miss Bessie is as conscious as I am to have a good reputation and to have the best grades. The way this text is written kind of explains what's happening in my life right now. I feel conflicted about whether I should leave this toxic person in my life or just overcome the obstacles I'm going through rightnow with him.  We don't agree on anything and we fight all the time. I haven't felt myself because of it. I felt that the text communicated with me a little based on the relationship with her boyfriend because my ex boyfriend would call me dumb and not smart enough to have a conversation with him as a smart person. This text changed the way I thought about him as a person; he was rude and ill-mannered just like when she felt betrayed by her boyfriend and was disgusted by him.

The text serves a kind of world where someone thinks ruthless and greedy people are valued more than the earnest and innocent ones. In the text it doesn't pass the who cares test because the young girl works hard for her grades and makes sure she is right on track even though she is scared and alone for what the future holds for her. “The grades in the newspaper would determine whether we would go on. Going on meant going to university. Our school was not for rich kids–they went to private institutions. It didn’t matter so much to their lives whether they did well in high school, because a place would be made for them somehow.”

The words and the way the author wrote the dialogue of the text really shows the emotion and how relatable the girl and the text was. This may speak out to many girls who have the same problem or something similar to the context. The young girl disagrees with her boyfriend and he calls her too smart and doesnt need her help makes her realize that her boyfriend is mindless which leads to her to focus on her future more so in the end it made her more mindful of her future. I enjoyed the text as a piece of entertainment because of how the narrator explains that its hard to be a woman growing up and shows the difficulties in it. The most entertaining part of this text was when the young girl is alone and feels that Miss Bessie is protecting her and making her feel safe. Later on she feels alone realizing her unknown future.  “Instead, in the bright place at the back of my head, there was an image of Miss Bessie... I would have to go into the tunnel whether I wanted to or not–the tunnel was the road of going on...Very soon I would be a last-year’s student. I would be gone from Miss Bessie’s world and she would be gone from mine”.  This work is inspired by the poem My Last Duchess by Robert Browning as an inspiration for a dramatic monologue on the life of a high school girl and her relationship to this poem in her English coursework. “But also–said the poem–hers wasn’t any old kind of smiling. Her smile had “depth and passion” and was “earnest.” I could see–now I was considering it at length–that a wife who went around smiling earnestly to the left and right could have been annoying. There were girls at school who smiled at everyone in the same earnest, humourless way.”  Honestly in the future I wouldn't read something like this because it is confusing if you don't pay attention. But if the author published something different I would read it  because I like the way the author's perspective on things and how she writes it. I would recommend this text to my cousin who loves to read texts like these. Also, she is an english major in college and wants to publish a book soon.
