I am going to write this essay based on my love for cooking. Cooking makes me feel alive. I started to cook when I was about 8 years old. The first time I cooked something myself was when I was at home with my sister. I was very hungry, but she was studying for a test, so I had to cook something for myself. The only thing I knew how to cook was Maggi which basically is instant noodles. Coming from a typical Gujrati family, parents are very protective of their children even after they grow up. I still remember my mom shouting at me for using the stove without any supervision as I was still a child and she also yelled at my sister for not giving me something to eat.

I also recall watching ‘MasterChef Australia’ and ‘MasterChef US’ with my sister on the television. I was so fascinated with all the different dishes the contestants cooked. I was so invested that I never skipped an episode. That was the moment when I found my profound love for food. I attempted to replicate some of the dishes that were on the show though obviously was not successful. Gordon Ramsay has also been an inspiration for me. I’ve watched almost all his shows which include ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and ‘Kitchen Nightmares’.

As I grew older, I started to learn to cook different things like chocolate mousse, butter garlic prawns, mashed potatoes, and pasta arrabbiata, just to name a few. I like to perfect each and every dish I make. If I ever don’t live up to the standards, the next time I make the same dish I try to perfect it in every way I can.

I think I do majority of my cooking when my mom goes to visit my grandma. My dad and I take chances to cook like some days he cooks lunch and I cook dinner and the other days I cook lunch and he cooks dinner. When I’m alone with my dad, I like to experiment with dishes that I cook. Both of us give constructive criticism to each other. My sister is studying in Austria, so I always send her photos of the food I cook, and she always tell me to cook for her whenever she comes for holidays.

I always resort to cooking when I’m feeling down. As I enter the kitchen, I forget about all my worries and all I can think about is ‘What to make today?’. Level of difficulty does not matter. Whether it be something as simple as grilled cheese or something as complicated as cinnamon rolls. A sense of calm rushes over me when I start to cook like if I’m in my happy place.

I remember buying the Masterclass subscription just to watch the masterclasses of two legendary cooks, Gordon Ramsay and Massimo Bottura. I learnt so much from both their masterclasses like the different knife skills, transforming traditional dishes into something more, among a few other things.

Marcel Boulestin once said, “Cookery is not chemistry. It is an art. It requires instinct and taste rather than exact measurements” When I first started cooking, it was just a hobby for me but over time I realised it’s much more than a hobby, it’s an art (probably the only art I’m good at). Like any other artist, every cook requires years of practice to perfect their art of cookery.
