So when I was 4 years old my dad taught me how to drive a tractor for the first time.  Being in charge of a vehicle gave me a great power.  I never lost my love of driving but needed to wait till I was older before I could drive bigger and better vehicles.  When i turned 15 my dad bought me an old truck to fix up and be my first truck.

This rusted out GMC 1500 from 1970 became my first truck.  It was my Dad’s friend’s truck who passed away.  Everything was wrong with this truck including the body, frame and engine.  We rebuilt the carburetor, striped the frame and painted it.  Unfortunately we were unable to finish all the repairs and rebuild needed before I turned 16 and needed a vehicle that I could drive now.

Here comes the beater car, which my Dad reminded me to not break it, in not so nice words.  Stern and endearing he reminded me the responsibility of having my own vehicle and how to take care of it.  I was responsible for buying my own gas and make any repairs needed.  This Lexus SC300 was more electrical work than body making it a different skill set to fix.  So, after driving this vehicle once, I decided it was the not the car for me. I have done a lot of stupid stuff in this vehicle, not limiting to jumping it over a ramp, donuts, burnouts and driving in all terrain.  I have pulled trailers with 5,000 pounded loaded in it.  It is a great vehicle as I have tried to kill it and could not.

I did not have to deal with this car long as another unfortunate event gave me my current car.  My Mustang which was given to me by my late Great Uncle.  Endearingly named Grandpappy to me he passed away from cancer, June 20, 2020.  We remember his quote,” Help me up”. He was one of my closer relatives who would talk to me about cars all the time and life experiences. His way of telling stories was better because he was always under the influence. He will be missed and his legacy lives on in my car.

The first time we got into it, it was extremely rough and felt like it was gonna shake to pieces. Carefully, we drove from the North Georgia Mountains to my house which is 90 minutes away.  As I drove, it became clear the amount of work to be done to this 2002 Mustang.

Most imperative work to be done was to pull the transmission out and replace the clutch.  I would in first because I could not shift gears nor stop.  While driving around with my friends, I got to a stop light and pushed the clutch in, feeling really stiff.  As soon as I let my foot up, I heard a horrible screeching noise and couldn’t shift or stop.  While replacing the clutch, my dad’s friend who owns a shop helped replace the breaks.  Other work needed on my Mustang to rebuild the rear differential, change the spark plugs and air intake. I have spent around $2500 on repairs.

My everyday car has cost me money that I had to earn from my jobs.  I have always gravitated towards jobs that allow me to drive different vehicles and make lots of money.  My first job is working with horses.  My mother’s friend offered me to work at his company in Pensacola, FL for two weeks.  I enjoyed the job and continued to go and travel with the horse show company.  This job has given me the opportunity to drive various vehicles.  One of my favorites is the Kubota tractor. We use this equipment to drag rings and move lots of material around. One of my other favorites was a skid steer, it’s a small wheel loader that we used to move lots of material at a time. I have also driven our f350 we use to pull the enclosed trailer, this trailer holds plants and misc. Our other truck is a semi we used to pull the flatbed jump trailer. When days off came I would drive horses for my parents with their ram 3500. In the early stages I have begun working independently doing grading. Carefully I move tons of rock and other materials a time and then flatten and spread them out with machinery. My equipment is a large single axle dump truck for moving material and pulling trailers. I also have a skid steer for moving material close and spreading it. Other equipment is important for specific jobs though. I also drive backhoes, loaders, tractors, bulldozers, and a special type of loader called a crawler loader. My most recent job has been moving asphalt millings for a friend and spreading them out to make his new driveway.

Driving for me has become more than a hobby but a lifestyle. I started driving for fun and now I make money by driving for companies. I can’t imagine my life without the driving experience i have now and all the opportunities i’ve had over the years.
