Narrative Essay On Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth has helped our nation evolve by using her passion to use words as a way of informing the public system about gender discrimination and as a way of allowing others to form new perspectives on this crucial issue. As a kid who was a slave, Truth had experienced many unfortunate events. Truth was called to become an avid activist and preacher when her son was sold in Alabama. The only way to get her son back was by filing a case and winning the case however the case was against a white man. But Truth’s race and gender did not limit her. This determination led her to become the first black woman to win a case against a white man. This had been Truth’s goal, to abolish unnecessary stereotypes, especially gender stereotypes. Truth wanted to set an example to the world and most importantly to her children. She wanted the world to understand that women are independent, women can change history, and women can WIN. Sojourner Truth has always had a passion to change the world and make it fair, that’s why her main mission was to spread her thoughts about the discrimination in our society to the community through her “Ain’t I A Woman” speech. In her speech, Sojourner Truth had said “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again” (Sojourner)! This shows that Truth really had intended to change the world because in her speech she connected the past to the present. Truth wanted to make an impactful statement and she did. In her speech, Truth talked about Eve (the first woman on Earth) from the Bible. She talked about how Eve ate the fruit and changed humanity because after eating the fruit Eve brought pain, suffering, and death to the world. So, Truth wanted to refer from the past so others can understand her perspective. Using words was a way Truth was able to convince others to change. Her words always had a deeper meaning allowing others to come to a clear realization about gender discrimination. With the strive to help our society, Sojourner Truth decided to let her voice be heard even if others did not like it. Through all her speeches Truth addressed important issues such as racism and sexism. For example, during her “Ain’t I A Woman” speech, Truth said “That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain’t I a woman” (History.com)? Truth’s determination allowed people all over the country to realize the inequality against humankind. Truth helped change the country by getting rid of stereotypes that people believed were true. Through her words in her speech Truth changed the public system because she addressed a stereotype about how women can’t be independent and can’t do anything on their own including voting. The first step to change the world is first informing others, and that's what Truth did best. Truth become part of the Women Suffrage and began writing speeches about how all people should have the same rights, and in her speeches, she explains that both genders are just as smart and strong as one another, and there should not be any type of discrimination. Through Truth’s speeches, Truth was able to change the public system by convincing others about how women should be treated with the same respect as men. Truth was a great influencer, and she devoted her whole life to fighting for the abolishment of gender stereotypes and discrimination. Truth helped to keep our country balanced because, without her, men would have had power over women causing arguments and separation between both genders, leading to an uncivilized society. Today we see that we have a society with discipline, respect, and dignity, we can thank Truth for creating a new fair system for the future generations of this country.
