On a casual Saturday morning at my house around 10, my brother and I decided to go fishing at Saylorville Lake. My brother and I weren't really motivated to get up and go because we were so tired and really wanted to sleep but we had also wanted to go fishing because we hadn't gone in a while. It was a very humid and sunny summer day with barely enough wind to help cool us down.

I had asked my brother “could we please go some other time? I want to sleep more”.

He replied yelling at me saying “NO”.

We got on the road at about 10:30 hoping to catch lots of fish that day. When we had arrived we had to look around for a good dock to fish on. We couldn't see the lake until we really got up to the dock and found out how low the water was about 5 ft. below the dock.

When looking over the dock I said “hopefully we can catch fish with the water level being so low.”

We didn't have high hopes of catching anything because of the water level but we just had to hope for the best and make do with what we had. We took our rods hooked and baited them up ready to cast them. The water being so low we had to throw our bait out even further to attempt to catch fish. We were determined since the water was low that we were going to catch fish that day. We both argued on who would catch a fish first because it had been an hour since we had arrived.

I told my brother “I will catch the first fish.”

He replied with “Don't get your hopes up.”

After almost an hour and a half around 11:45 without catching anything I felt a very light tug on my rod. At first I thought it was just my line getting snagged but then suddenly my rod jolted and I knew I had a fish hooked.

I panicky said “Fish on!”

I knew at first sight that this was going to be an intense fight with this fish. My rod was starting to bend forward and I was determined that I was going to be able to bring this fish in. 1 minute into intensely reeling in this fish I could feel the mass on this thing and I knew this would be my personal record. There was sweat dripping down my face from the hot beating sun. I decided to yank my rod back and reel at a decent speed to make sure that the fish was on and that I wouldn't lose it. I made sure I reeled in slowly to make sure I didn't snap the line due to all the force on my line because of how big this fish was. We didn't realize how massive the fish was  until it had reached the top of the water so we had to make a quick decision to get off the dock and walk into the water to retrieve the fish because of how big it was. When we got down off the dock and towards the sandy ground by the water. My brother had to take his shoes and socks off and quickly ran into the water to grasp the fish so that my line did not break.

When we weighed the fish I shouted in excitement “let's go! That's my personal record.”

We had both taken pictures of the fish claiming it was our own posting them on social media. After catching the first fish of the day we decided that we weren't going to try to catch any more fish because of how long it took us to catch my fish and reel it in. After fishing that day I was way to nervous on going back out with that same line so we decided to put a brand new line on it so we wouldn't have to run into

After catching the first fish of the day we decided that we weren't going to try to catch any more fish because of how long it took us to get my fish and reel it in. After fishing that day I decided that the fish was way too close to snapping my line so I decided to put in a new line with a larger weight capacity to be able to have a way less stressful experience. I knew that next time I go out fishing I would be more prepared and confident so that I don't have to worry about this same situation happening again.
