It was May 2017. I woke up quite early because today was a special day, as I would be having a big field trip at school today. This field trip would last around 12 hours, from 6 AM to 6 PM, which is why I woke up at 5 AM. The people who would be accompanying me on this trip would be a talkative guy with blue eyes and blond hair named Frank, and his father, the chaperone of the group, who wears glasses and is balding a little, named Mr. B. The sky was still dark, as the sun hadn't risen yet. When I arrived at school, the sun was barely up, but it was visible, but not much of it could be seen. The field trip finally started, and I was met with a big surprise.

Usually, we are driven in a typical school bus, however these buses were different. They seemed so luxurious, as they looked fancy, as well as having a bathroom and WiFi. There was even a dvd player, and some people brought movies to watch. The dvd player was not as cool as you might think though, but it is still cool, as it can only play one dvd, which is broadcasted to other screens throughout the bus. I remember watching Finding Nemo, and my friend Frank brought a copy of Big Hero 6, but we didn’t get to watch it. I can see why the field trip started so early, as the ride to Sacramento was quite long.  I spent quite a lot of time on the bus in general just looking at the window.

I didn’t even notice that I had arrived due to my daydreaming, but we were finally at the California Senate, the very first destination for the day. I felt like I had arrived in the afternoon, but it was still the morning, since the field trip started so early. When we entered the building, we first did a bag scan before starting the tour. The building was honestly quite large, as the ceilings were high, the hallways were quite long, and the walls were far apart from each other. The tour starts with us walking to a room, which appeared to be the room where all of the people there would debate. I am not very knowledgeable in politics so I am not sure about this. However, in the room, there was a big light up sign with individual leds, similar to a scoreboard, that said “Hello Laneview Elementary!”. I thought that was pretty cool honestly.

We then went into another big room that had some pictures of some former governors. The interesting thing about this is that the terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was a former governor, which was quite interesting in my opinion.

After that, I had some lunch. I had the classic lunch I’d always bring to field trips, the good ol’ ham sandwich. Mr B. also had a sandwich, and Frank had some pizza Lunchables that I used to think were so good, but after trying them once, I think they really suck, but Frank really seems to disagree. Unbeknownst to everyone, after lunch, a big surprise awaited us.

As we continued the tour, we entered the governor's office, and we got to meet the guy himself. At the time, the California governor was Jerry Brown. I think it was a big honor meeting him, as he was an interesting fellow honestly. He told some interesting stories, such as the time he got to meet Barack Obama. He told Jerry that in school they used to call him Barry. He also got to play some golf with him, which was cool. Mr. B. asked the governor if he knew any government secrets, but the governor pretended that he didn’t hear what he said. I was a little shy honestly, so I didn’t really talk to him much. Before we left, he gave some people autographs. Frank was one of the lucky individuals to get one, but he unfortunately misplaced it. Luckily, Mr. B also got an autograph, so at least there was some proof of us meeting the governor. We then say our goodbyes and go to the bus.

Our next destination, the California State Railroad Museum. The trip to that was also quite long, but at least I had some entertainment on the way, as they were now playing Finding Nemo on the dvd players. On the way though, we stopped at a candy shop. The candy shop had a variety of candies, everything from A to Z. They even had some “toxic waste” candy, which is just some very sour candy. I didn’t have much money on me at the time, so I got my go-to candy, which is a Kit Kat, although I also like Twix. Frank got some M&Ms and he also got a Snickers bar for Mr. B.

After a good hour or so, we arrived at the museum. There were many trains and such at the museum. There was also a train hotel sort of thing that you could walk through and a “train simulator” where it felt like you were on a moving train. I remember this one time in one of the trains, there was a man that was sitting in the conductor's seat as a conductor, and I thought he was a mannequin. He moved and then I flinched, which I think was quite funny. There is not much I can say about the museum, as it was quite mundane.

At the gift shop, there were a plethora of souvenirs. However, I didn’t have much money left, so the rest of my money, I bought a few train whistles that were 50 cents a pop. I gave some of them to Frank and Mr. B. The whistles are just wooden whistles that make a train whistle sound when blown into. The bus then drove us to our final destination of the day, which was also dinner.

We went to Round Table Pizza to end the day. I was quite happy that we got to go here for dinner, as I got to have not only pizza, but it was also all you can eat, including drinks and free refills. I had around four slices of pizza, and I remember this other kid saying that he had eleven slices of pizza. I don’t know if he was joking or not, but good for him, he was taking advantage of a free all you can eat pizza dinner, and I think that’s quite funny. Frank told me this and I told him that eating all that pizza must’ve been a “pizza cake”. He chuckled after hearing my pun. After that nice dinner, we went home.

The trip home was honestly quite bittersweet, because I was a little sad that it ended. A lot of the time spent on the way home was me just reminiscing about the good times I just had. It was quite surreal coming home from a field trip so late.

I think that this kind of field trip is a one in a lifetime opportunity. After elementary school, you usually don’t have any field trips, unless you join a club or an elective. This might seem dramatic, but I really do think that I will never ever experience another field trip like this. It truly was the best field trip and the best day of my childhood.
