“It takes dedication and hard work to constantly improve yourself” -Unknown. I believe that dedication is the key to improvement and success. The root of the word dedication is the Latin word dedicare, meaning “the giving of oneself to some purpose.” It takes perseverance, self determination, and a good attitude to be truly dedicated to something. I can examine many instances in my life where true dedication has caused me to grow and improve.

My story of dedication starts when I was just two years old. I was having a lot of trouble walking, and always fell down. My parents originally thought that I was just a slow walker, but then it became clear to them that something was wrong with me. They took me to the doctor, and he observed the way I was walking. He thought that my legs were different lengths, so he had me go to a different doctor. This doctor did some testing, and came to the conclusion that… drum roll please… I was just really clumsy. I kept working hard at walking and running, and at three I really wanted to run a 5k, something that a year ago my parents would never have thought I would be able to do. They signed me up, and I had no trouble running the whole race. My parents never guessed that I’d be able to run that race because with the power of dedication I had rapidly improved in just one year.

I continued to run, and when I was about six years old I decided to do my first triathlon. My brother had been winning first place every year, and I thought that I could win, too. When the race started, I realized that I have a huge weakness, swimming. I was very far behind because of the swim, and I got farther and farther behind. I fell off the bike and scraped my knee and by the end I looked like a mess. I was so happy and so excited that I had completed my very first triathlon. Then, when the scores came out, I saw that my brother had gotten first and I had gotten closer to last than first. I was still proud of myself because of the amount of work it took me to get there and how much I’d improved because of the hard work I’d put in.

I started to take running even more seriously in 6th grade. When the season started, even though I was very nervous, I placed well. I felt like I didn’t need to put in the extra work to do well in races. I did well all that season, but when the season was over I went a while without practicing and still expected myself to run the same pace as I was running mid season. Turns out that I was worse, and I learned that in order to improve, I needed to dedicate myself to running.

Dedication has had a considerable impact on me. Although I chose to talk about just one part of my life, running, dedication can present itself in many different ways. I owe all improvement and achievements in my life to my dedication. If you are ever struggling to improve yourself, put in the time and effort. Have dedication. This I believe.
