Being a college student is a unique experience. It comes with confusion and the transition from being a child to being an adult. It’s a time of finding yourself, and that comes with being perplexed by the individual you really are. I’ve always had these issues, especially since I started working on my Associate in Arts degree. Thankfully though, Somerset Community College offers many resources that can help students find out more about themselves. Using these resources made me discover new information about my personality and made me find out more about what career choices I could pursue. In this essay, I will discuss how I personally utilized these resources, and what they made me discover about myself.

All approximately 8 billion people on Earth have unique personalities. Every single person has traits and characteristics that set them apart from everyone else. I’ve always considered myself to be an introvert and taking the Personality Survey confirmed what I already knew. From taking the test on the 16 personalities website, I found that my personality type is INFP-T, which falls under the “mediator” group of personalities. According to the website, INFP personality types are quote "introverted, intuitive, feeling and prospecting.” I feel as if these describe me very well. As a college student there’s many pros and cons of being an INFP type. One of my biggest strengths is that I’m very creative, which is in fact one of the traits associated with INFP-T types. A con of that same trait would be the fact that I’m extremely introverted, which makes it difficult to meet new people and try new things, which is a key part of the college experience. Overall, being an INFP personality causes me to experience life outside of the box.

Taking the Self Awareness Survey made me as a student gauge how much support I have from college staff and from those outsides of my school environment. It also made me question how dedicated I am to my degree, and what I plan to do after graduating. After completing the Self Awareness Survey, I realized that there is probably more I can do to plan for my future after SCC. Questions 1-11 focused on just that. This set of questions primarily asked how prepared I am for my future, and how much I’m focused on completing my degree. I answered strongly agree to question number 2, which asked if I was committed to earning a degree. Although that seems like a simple yes or no answer, it really made me think about how important earning my AA degree is, and how much I need to commit to obtaining it. I simply answered “agree” to question number 4, so it was slightly closer to the disagree side of things. This question asked if “college is preparing me for a better job.” This really made me think. Yes, I do believe my career is preparing me for a good career, but what exactly could that career be? I’m very unsure about what job opportunities I could get after earning my degree. Finding ways to utilize my degree is something I need to learn more about. Overall, I answered strongly agree or a simply agree to all the questions in this group.

The second part of the Self Awareness Survey included questions that differed from the first part. These questions were split into 3 different groups, including 12-22, 23-33, and 34-44. The first set focused on questions on how much I believe in myself as a student. I answered “strongly agree” to most of these questions, including number 15. This question asked if “I have built positive relationships with my friends.” I feel as if I have beneficial friendships, so I had to agree. One of the questions I did answer disagree to was number 22, which asked me if I was meeting the goals I had set for myself. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m not in a place that I imagined myself a few years ago, but I still believe that I’m making a different kind of personal progress. Questions 23-33 included ones about family and friends, and the support they give me as a student. Unfortunately, I had to answer disagree to many of these questions, which revealed that strong relationships are something I need to work on. The last set of questions, 34-44, primarily focused on my social and problem-solving skills. I answered “agree” to questions 41 and 42, which asked me how well my schoolwork management skills are. Although I usually get my work done on time, I have a habit of procrastinating and that is something that could be approved upon. Overall, taking the survey made me be more aware of myself and my abilities as a student.

One of the resources available though SCC is Career Exploration. I am almost completely unsure about what career paths I might pursue and taking the Career Exploration test helped me find ones I might be interested in. My highest-ranking category was education and training, which is something I’ve considered before. Another high-ranking career choice was marketing, sales, and service, which I currently work in as a credit union teller. The test also revealed that my top traits are enterprising, artistic and social. A social trait came as a surprise to me, as it conflicts with my INFP personality type. Overall, I feel as if pursuing a career in the educational field might be a good fit for me, as the Career Exploration test shows it could be.

In conclusion, utilizing these resources made me more confident of myself as a college student. They also helped me discover more about various career fields, and which ones would be a good fit for my personality type. Using these resources also made me as a student more aware of my strengths and weaknesses, and what I can do to improve myself. Having a social trait with an INFP personality type came as a surprise, and just goes to show how complex personalities really are.
