For me, reading was never really a hobby, but rather just a part of who I am. Or at least that’s how I felt for the longest time before highschool. I can recall being told I was gifted, talented or highly astute for my age all because of how much I liked to read as a child. I was even offered the opportunity to skip kindergarten because my reading level was so high. However I declined due to a fear of being surrounded by people who would be older than me. Sometimes I wonder how things might’ve turned out differently had I accepted. Anyways, back to reading. I remember being so excited to finally learn how to read in elementary and wanting to learn as many words as I could. I loved being able to pick up stories and not only understand them, but be able to vividly visualize and imagine the story playing out like a little movie in my head. It became a paradise for me- a safe haven of sorts, and with my love of reading came a love for writing. I wanted to write my own stories and read them aloud for others to enjoy just as much as I did. My favorite type of stories to read and write were of course fantasy. Those were the type of novels I could really get lost in. It was a way I could abandon the world I knew and venture into one that was so much better. A world where I felt like I could be myself- weird quirks and all and no one would judge me for it. I later learned that reading was actually a coping mechanism for me, and perhaps I haven’t turned to it as much lately because I’ve found other coping mechanisms. Nowadays I classify my reading style as a binge reader. Although I haven’t read as many novels lately, I’ve still done a fair amount of reading webcomics and (a part of me knows this isn’t healthy) I’ll read them in large chunks of time, then take week long breaks from reading them. When I try to think of one moment that highlights who I am as a reader, I suppose it would be the time when I was in 7th grade, I was reading so much and so frequently that I was neglecting my responsibilities at home. My parents then decided as a punishment, they would not only ground me, but take away my books. At the time I of course complained, demanding “Who takes away books from their child?!” I couldn’t believe it. Now though, my family and I are all able to laugh about it.

I think reading has made me a more empathetic person. It’s given me the ability to put myself in someone else's shoes and try to experience their life. At first I would use it to just relate to the main character and feel closer to the story's world, but eventually I found myself carrying over the skill in real life. Empathizing with my friends and peers. Reading has also definitely made me a better writer, and for that I will always be grateful. I discovered my dream job all because of how much I loved to read and tell stories.
