Social media is bad for children under the age of thirteen. Social media has many negative effects on many people, children in general. In a survey done by Statista, seventy percent of the people surveyed stated they have felt left out using social media, and because of this they felt upset or sad. More than  half of the teens using social media say that social media distracts them from getting school work done. Common Sense Media found that forty-two percent of teenagers agree social media has taken time away from spending time with people they care about.

The Center for Parenting Education found that at age twelve,  children become less-impulsive, kids accept discipline, and develop more mature behaviors. At the age of thirteen, teenagers tend to become more responsible. In summary, at the age of twelve children start developing better behavior patterns and at the age of thirteen, teenagers become more responsible. Children are less aware of the dangers of social media. An Italian security study found that eight percent of instagram accounts are fake. While children are still developing, they might give into peer pressure. Seven percent of teens using social media say they felt peer pressured to do unwanted acts of a bad nature. Social media is a place where anyone can communicate with anyone they want to. Due to this, adults can talk to under-age children and persuade them to give them personal information. This would be dangerous for children who are too young to understand.

Statista cites that thirty-five percent of teens who have been cyberbullied, have a low social-emotional well being. Anyone can say anything they want, and have it be anonymous. Anyone can be behind a screen. One site states thirty-five percent of catfish victims experience psychological consequences. Staying up on social media late leads to losing sleep. Sleeping naturally removes a toxin the brain builds up, while you are awake. Sleep removes a toxin called beta-amyloid, that is known for appearing in Alzheimer's’ patients. Loss of sleep has many negative effects such as high blood pressure, strokes, and depression. Social media should not be in the way of getting sleep.

Other people may say as technology advances, so does social media and the world along with it.  While this is true, this does not erase the negatives and dangers of social media.
