Rowan Atkins successfully manipulates body language, gestures, and facial expression, as well as situational comedy in several scenes throughout the skit to give an air of comedy to his situation. In “The Exam” Atkinson as Mr Bean, successfully manipulates facial expressions and gestures, as well as comedic timing and body language, to create an amusing mood. Body language and facial expressions are utilised well at 00.00.15 seconds into the clip, as Mr Bean realises that he cannot complete the exam. Melodramatic body language and comedic timing are spread throughout the clip and are also displayed well at 04.01 when Mr Bean pretends to drop his pen so that he can cheat on his deskmate’s paper. These techniques were used to show the worry and idiocy of Atkinson’s character, and make the audience laugh at his absurd ideas. Atkinson has utilised the elements of drama to create a comical storyline, in another wise pressured situation.

This essay has demonstrated Rowan Atkinson’s successful exploitation of dramatic techniques to give light to an otherwise stressful situation.
