Experienced leaders trust effective communication in their daily lives and cannot successfully lead the organization without it. The NCOCCC of Communication is one of the six NCO Common Core Competencies that allow leaders to operate effectively as a professional members of ready and lethal force. Key points of this competency include Verbal, Written communications, Facilitation, Negotiations, and Active Listening (NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICER LEADERSHIP CENTER OF EXCELLENCE NCO COMMON CORE COMPETENCIES (NCO C3) 2019, p.10). Those are essential elements that played a crucial part in the overall success of Operation OVERLORD. In August 1942, Canadian forces raided the small port of Dieppe. This operation was a disaster and showed all issues that a large-scale effort would potentially face. One of the problems was inadequate communication between a ship and shore which resulted in Commander's being unaware of what was happening on the front (OPERATION OVERLORD AND THE PRINCIPLES OF WAR, 2002, p.1). Based on that event, British Army Lieutenant General Fredrick E. Morgan was selected to head a planning staff and given the title Chief of Staff Supreme Allied Commander (COSSAC, also the team's name). Their mission was to plan Operation OVERLORD as a full-scale invasion of Europe. The approved strategic plan was a great example of following all principles of war and collaboration between three services, gathering their inputs, and creating a Joint Command. General Eisenhower wrote simple and inclusive order for OVERLOAD, which enabled subordinate commands' confidence, encouraged their freedom of maneuvers, and was the ultimate key to the tactical and operational success (OPERATION OVERLORD AND THE PRINCIPLES OF WAR, 2002, p.4-5). Even though operation OVERLOAD involved multiple tactical operations performed on a large scale, the campaign plan outlined the commander's intent clearly, simply, and concisely. COSSAC's and General Eisenhower's communication style ensured that all soldiers understood the mission, knew the expectations, and successfully executed the task.
