Opinion Essay Sample. The Flaws in Our Education System
I have a strong opinion on how schools should update their education system. I think the current education system is flawed and very outdated. By cramming lessons into children's heads, forcing them to memorize the contents, and then stressing them out with a test; is not how schools should teach students.
Humans are designed to learn, grow and express themselves, but schools prevent them from doing so. By forcing children to learn thing’s they are not interested in, schools hinder their creativity and their enthusiasm. The school education system discourages children from following their dreams and passions, they say it's too “unrealistic”. Schools want children to grow up to work desk jobs all their lives until they retire. And this is exactly how the rich get richer and the poor stay poor. Schools do not teach you how to be successful in life, they teach you how to make ends meet. The rich did not follow what the school taught them, and most of them were high school dropouts. They became rich because they utilized their creativity and followed their passions; they made something of themselves.
It will benefit everyone if schools update their systems to take into account the needs of children, rather than the other way around. Children like to learn and explore their own interests. If we encourage them to follow their own interests, it could create a better future for society. Learning is supposed to be a fun and interactive learning experience, but by forcing hour lectures on children. Forcing them to memorize words for a test, only to appease the teachers and the education system, is just ridiculous. Not to mention the stress levels that tests give students is just unbelievable. Did you know? Studies show ordinary kids nowadays report more Anxiety than child Psychiatric patients in the 1950s. It just goes to show that times have changed, but we refuse to change with it. The current system is very outdated and it needs to be modernized “as it does not apply to the diverse learning styles of today and does not prepare students for the real world”, quoted by U.S Education: An Outdated System. Over the time schools were invented, in 1635, education and technology have changed because we have easy access to more information. But more information means more work and stress, meaning with the little time of 12 years you have with students, schools are filling their heads with even more information faster. By allowing students to "learn" faster and overcome more lessons, students become even more overwhelmed and stressed.
If schools changed and updated the education system to suit the unique personalities and interests of each individual student, the number of delinquents ditching class could greatly reduce. All in all, changing the education system to favor the student would be the best course of action for society and the future. Because if you think about it, it’s the students that will be the future of society. If we never change the education system, none of the problems in the world will ever change. It is obvious that our world is very problematic, and we humans are destroying it with the technology we have created. In each generation, they cause problems and look to the next generation to solve them, and they never do. They make it worse. This has been the case for many years, decades, or even longer. If we do not change the education system and change the minds of the future, we may just be able to save ourselves and our planet. The education of children is so important to their growth when we teach them to suppress their opinions and obey the commands of teachers. How do you think this will affect them in the future?
In Fact, a man named Elon Musk founded his own school, called “Ad Astra School ''. This is an experimental school, “designed to cultivate student voice, strategic thinking, and collaborative problem solving” quoted by Synthesis. In this experimental school, grades are not required for the semester. In addition, children can leave school at any time if they wish.There are no required courses. If children feel uncomfortable with a course, they can drop out without any problems. “The regular schools weren’t doing the things that I thought should be done. So I thought, well, let's see what we can do”, Elon Musk said. Coming from someone with an IQ of about 155 and a GPA of 3.9 or higher; probably one of the most intelligent people alive, he is on to something.
I believe if we give students more freedom, they will actually learn more enthusiastically. I think we should follow Elon Musk’s ideology and modernize the school system. And begin to change the future of the world for the better. Let’s start by providing students with a better education system!
