Society has blossomed into an incredibly diverse and tenacious function, one that challenges the ideals of the past and sheds light on the possibilities ahead. Today, society would not endure such a stable function if not for the events and people of the past who decided to challenge those constrictions that enabled a socially progressive society. As society progresses, it is clear that it is not our agreements that have sculpted our reality, but rather our disagreements. Through both protest and nonviolence, Oscar Wilde’s claim that disobedience is a valuable human trait is exceedingly valid in the pursuit of a socially-progressive society.

Protest has continuously proved advantageous in the pursuit of a progressive society, enabling those oppressed by, or those who are simply against a cause to exercise their disapproval. This form of disobedience has proven incredibly beneficial to not only past societies, but the society that surrounds us today. In twenty-twenty, protests ensued throughout the United States and many countries worldwide, consequent of the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed African American individual who was accused of using fake currency at a nearby gas station. His death provoked hundreds of thousands of people to take to both social media and the streets to show their displeasure with the functions and decisions of the government. What followed this feat were changes within the United States police enforcements, primarily on a state-by-state level. Cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, and San Francisco each defunded local police departments drastically, aimed at developing a more personal connection with the community, eliminating the need for excessive police presence. Flipping a socially-charged switch, these protests shed an immense amount of light on the subject of unlawful killings and injustice within police departments across not only the United States, but globally as well, progressing society in a socially-positive way.

With feeble influence on political decisions, the average citizen is left  for if the choice is one of mass opposition, protest is likely to follow. Before 2015, certain states within the U.S. were allowed to deny homesexual individuals the right to get married, an incredibly unethical law by today’s standards. It wasn’t until 1959 when the first protests in support of same sex marriage ocurred. In a clash with the Los Angeles Police Department, who frequently harassed homosexual indiviudals at a bakery in L.A., the protestors decided to stand up for themselves and their community which angered the police, causing the incarceration of a number of protestors. Although a seemingly small incident, this was one of the first forms of protests that the LGBTQ community performed, showing their resilience in what was oppression that had gone on for far too long. By demonstrating their stance towards insurmountable oppression that the community faced, changes were made. Society, although nearly sixty years later, overturned a law that only would have existed in the hopes and dreams of many individuals, highlighting the effect that disobedience has on progressing society’s social constructs.

Oscar Wilde’s claim that disobedience promotes a socially-progressive society is exemplified through unified acts of protest and through the challenging of governmental decisions, causing his claim to be overwhelmingly valid. History has many moments that have played a defining role in the shape of today’s society, yet nearly all of them seem to take the form of disobedience. From the unlawful killing of an unarmed African American man to the refusal to endure continuous homosexual oppressiveness, protest and disagreement have sculpted a progressive masterpiece, one that represents not solely those in power, but those of great adversity and great suffer. It is through disobedience that a progressive society can continue.

It is through unity that disobedience can create change . It is through disobedience that our societal sculpture can be molded.
