Percy Jackson is an ordinary 12-year-old kid, with ordinary problems, in an ordinary city. Ordinary. Little does Percy know he’s not ordinary, ordinarily kids don’t think they are ordinary but ordinary kids aren’t Demi-gods because demi-gods aren’t ordinary in fact they are as unordinary as unordinary comes.

Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is a slam-dunk of a fantasy book by Rick Riordan, and it is the book I will be reviewing. Rick Riordan is an amazing American fantasy author, most notably for writing book series about different mythologies including Greek, Norse and Egyptian. Percy Jackson is a book suitable for all ages and is a mountain of fun for kids interested in Greek mythology. In this adventure of a review, I will be talking about every amazing aspect of this book. To start my review, I will talk about how Percy is not well equipped for great power so he may need to take a nap somewhere along the journey.

“With great power... comes great need to take a nap. Wake me up later.” ― Rick Riordan, The Last Olympian This quote is very fitting for Percy because one day he was an ordinary boy with ADHD and dyslexia the next he’s going to the depths of Hades and doggy-paddling in an ocean – without getting wet! With this he would not be well equipped to great power so he would need to take an eternal nap, well he does have an eternity to live so he would be able to. Rick Riordan made this book special in so many ways, my next paragraph will show this.

Some of the reasons Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is such a big hit is because of Rick Riordan’s writing style is so spectacular that it feels like I am in the book experiencing everything! Percy Jackson is an extremely special book series for Rick Riordan because it was made to be a bedtime story for his dyslexic son and so he made Percy relatable for his son. Next, I will be talking about the shining stars of the book – the characters!

The characters of a book make or break it, and the characters of Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief really made the book. The diversity of the book with the humans, demi-gods, gods and more create an amazing world and it really leaves you wondering are demi-gods real and your perception is wrong? “It's funny how humans can wrap their mind around things and fit them into their version of reality.” ― Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief. The character of Percy changes from a no-good worthless kid to a powerful demi-god. Percy navigates having to save the world and he is also trying to figure out the struggles of being a teen in the modern world. The next character I will talk about is Percy’s best friend Grover. Grover Underwood is a satyr; a satyr is a half goat-half human being. Along with being a satyr he protects Percy from the dangers of Greek mythology. The last character I will talk about is Annabeth. Annabeth Chase is a half-blood as well; she is daughter of Athena. She arrived at camp-half-blood when she was seven years old because she ran away from home because her stepmom was extremely rude to her, and her dad didn’t care about her. Annabeth accompanies Percy and Grover on their quest across America to deliver the master bolt to Zeus before the world is destroyed.

The book is set across America as Percy, Grover and Annabeth try to find out how to give the master bolt to Zeus before a war unfolds between him, Poseidon and Hades, if this war were to occur it would end the world.

I personally loved Rick Riordan’s writing style but I didn’t really enjoy the storyline of the book so I would give this book 2.75/5 stars. The main reason I didn’t like the book is because I am not interested in Greek mythology, apart from this I would recommend this book for all ages, but I think that kids aged 9-12 would enjoy this the most.
